mosin nagant M 44 question
I bought a Mosin M44 from a local pawn shop. the stock is in useable shape with no cracks etc. But it is in rough shape. I have not been able to find a replacement M44 carbine stock. Can a 91/30 be cut down and re fitted to the carbine? I would have to carve hole for sling and barrel band springs, etc.

Shouldn't be a problem, here's a feller who fitted an M44 stock to a 91/30:

I am trying the reverse, cutting a long stock to fit the carbine.

Personally, I would just refinish the existing stock. But there's no reason it won't work.

You could always buy one of the "sporter" composite stocks being offered. But like the man say's...... Tender caring love on the stock you have might be the best answer.

Yes. Yes. Why?93marshooter wrote:I bought a Mosin M44 from a local pawn shop. the stock is in useable shape with no cracks etc. But it is in rough shape. Here is an example of a 91/33 stock cut down to M44 - 91/56 length...

But the wood is really easy to work with - sandpaper & Teak Oil do wonders - so why muck around cutting down a 91/30 if you HAVE an M44??
However, if you want to spend money rather than time, try http://www.buymilsurp.com ... though they don't have any M44 stocks right now...

Re: mosin nagant M 44 question
It is good to do a little research before making changes. My rifle is a "Mosin Nagant Gyalogsagi Karbely, 48.Minta" Mosin Nagant Model 1948 Infranty Carbine. It was made in Hungry at FEG plant Budpest Marked 1953 with county markings "02". It has matching serial number through out except for bolt. The Hungarians made these copies of Russian M44 in 1953 and 1952. Most likely used in 1956 uprising with all the others. Imported to this county name is "CAI Georgia VT" I don't think I will do much to change this rifle just a little oil or was on stock and oil on metal. and remove any rust. The stock has already had to much sanding and damage. Maybe just wear from use.
