30-40 krag went hunting

Post by JerryB »

Yesterday I took a 112 year old rifle deer hunting, saw one deer briefly.

Love the Krag!

Yours looks like it's still in original condition. I have one that the stock had been lightly
sanded and then varnished (incuding the receiver) it was well preserved anyway.

One of the smoothest and most accurate rifles I own. Always wanted one that's been
sporterized for hunting duty!

Gun Digest 1994 had and article which I think was a series and for that year it was an old Krag that someone inherited from an uncle. The author used it to shoot an antelope.

Jason, this rifle has a couple of pieces of wood missing. The piece over the rear sight and the long bottom piece. naturally the front hardware is missing too. My grandson bought it for me from a man in town for $200 bucks. I have wanted one for alot of years, this suits me just fine.

Still has the full 30 inch barrel.

JerryB, that is a nice looking rifle. With that short forearm the 30" barrel really looks long!

My 30-40 1896 Krag sporter has killed many deer for me. I got it from a friend who's dad used it for elk in Colorado. Now days it shoots only cast bullets and still takes a couple deer a year. It's good to see these old rifles still out shooting.

I do love the Krag. I have to say it is my favorite rifle to take to the range. Mine is a very accurate cast bullet shooter. I've yet to hunt with mine but that may change very shortly. My G-Grandfather, father, uncle and great uncle all took deer the my Krag. I'd love for my sons to each get one with it as well to keep it "generational":)

kragluver, could you tell me from a picture about the rear sight on mine?
I don't cast, what bullet cast bullet do you load?

I've passed up so many nicely converted Krags, that I'm seriously thinking of picking one up now.

From the side, that appears to be a Model 1902 rear sight. It could be a Model 1898 but most likely it is an '02 as the '98 sights were withdrawn after the unsuccessful experiment with the 2200 fps ammo. Look here for photos:

http://www.kragcollectorsassociation.org/kca/photos.htm

I personally shoot the Lee C312-185-1R sized .312 cast from 100% WW over 19.0 gr of SR4759 (CCI 200 primers). This gives me about 1700 fps out of my cut down 24" barrel. It is a great 200 yard target load and will routinely hold better than 2 MOA. I have a Redfield "No Drill" peep sight on my rifle (it also still wears the original Model 1901 sight). I've yet to hunt with my Krag but I plan on taking it to the lease tomorrow and try for a hog.

kragluver, thanks for the link. From what I can tell it is a 1902 sight. I belive from the pictures it should have a small nurled knob on the right side like the left side has.

My Krag is a Cablea's special run of Ruger #1A in 30-40 Krag! Never could find a decent original Krag without a shot out barrel.

I was given one like that - only mine is a little older I guess - 1898 model. It was given to my dad by his uncle who'd sporterized it - just like yours. I decided that this needed to be remidied, so I found a replacement piece for the forward wood and got the bayo lug hardware to replace the missing parts...

O.S.O.K. my rifle is also a Model 1898 made in 1899 according to the serial number and the inspectors cartouche on the left forward side of the grip. I have seen the inspectors name listed with Krag information, but I can't recall it now.
I have thought about trying to return to the original condition. I would need the two pieces of wood and the hardware, maybe later on.

JSA = John Sumner Adams

His stamp will be found on most (but not all) Krags.

Jerry, it's just one piece of walnut - you cut the stock where the band sits - right in the middle so that the seam is hidden. I got this off of gunbroker. The guy might still be offering them... There was no fitting to this at all - it's made for this refurb operation.
