New Marlin XLR

Local gun store had a used 336xlr in 35rem for $350($400 OTD). Its a 2007 model so hopefully doesnt suffer from issues the newer ones have. I now just need to decide to chop it to 18" or leave it be. Should be a dandy deer rifle either way.

Nice find!! Can't go wrong at that price. Personally I prefer blue steel ,but the stainless looks good with that laminated stock.

I would like to have found that deal, then converted it to 356!!??? That is my plan, some day anyway.

I had XLR's in 30-30 , 35 REM , 308 EXP , 338 EXP , 444 , 45-70 and 450 Marlin and they all shot nicely !

I hunted the 336XLR 35 REM one time and shot a big old fat doe with it using the Hornady rubber tipped factory stuff and put the gun away after that . Sold it for almost what I paid for it new !

If I remmember correctly when I sighted mine in with the Hornady Leverevolution ammo I was getting three shots at about an inch at 100 yards from the bench using a 9x scope . I am sorry to say I never did handload for the rifle before I sold it . But after what it did with the factory stuff I never really saw reason to handload for it !

When I was flush with about every model and cartridge Marlin ever made in a lever action I had no less then 4 rifles chambered for 35 REM . I had a 336XLR like you have that was strictly a Leverevolution rifle . had a circa 1952 336SC which has a 20" barrel and at the time was wearing a Lyman peep sight and shooting the RCBS 35-200GC bullet . I also had a pair of Marlin 336D's , these were rifles that in appearance looked just like a Marlin 1895G (Guide Gun) but with a trimmer barrel . The barrels on these are 18 3/4" and I shot handloads with the Remington Core Lokt 200 grain RN in one and handloads with the Ranch Dog 359-190GC in the other .

I gotta say the carrying of the 336XLR with the 24" pipe was no worse then carrying the others .

The 336XLR with the rubber tipped stuff dropped the only deer I shot with it at the crack of the rifle . The same can be said for the 336D I was shooting the Core Lokt's in . And the 336SC shot one and it went maybe 10 feet before it crumpled as well . Sorry to say I never killed a deer with the 336D RD 359-190GC combo but I see no reason it wouldn't have done as nicely as the RCBS 200 grainer did in the 336SC .

My suggestion on chopping the barrel would be to use it a year or so before making your decision . You can always cut it off , but once you cut it off you d..ned sure can't put it back !

Congtrats on the "new" rifle. I love mine. I have one in 45-70. In reference to cutting it down, it depends what type of hunting, shooting you do. I used mine for a year hunting in thick timber and that longer barrel did hang up or get caught in brush once in a while.
I then had it cut down and I love it. It's a little lighter but recoil is not an issue with a Limbsaver. you can get one that fits without modifications. Accuracy was not affected. I get three shots touching at 100 yards with the Leverevolution stuff using a 2.5 scope. Here's a pic of it. Clements Custom Guns did it and did a superb job. They're on leverguns home page I believe.

That's the PERFECT size loop - not comically-large for 'show', but practically made to fit a gloved hand, larger fingers, or just be quicker to get the hand into...
