Made a Alpine Horn
I`ve always wanted one of these but don`t want to spend the big bucks and can`t play a note anyway.
So we made one from roof tin and a piece of flex pipe, bending that tin and spot welding 12 feet of it was a chalange.
But we never let anything whoop us if we can help it so we got er done.
It tapers from 4 in. too 2 in, hard to tell in the pic.--cone is 12 inch
Will see if i can play a tune on it at a later date.

Re: Made a Alpine Horn
That's very neat! I heard some guys playing them on the town square of a small town in the German Alps last summer. It really made a nice sound and hearing them in unison made it even more melodious.
I teach German at a local school district and some of the kids in class think it's "corny". But when you explain to them that these horns (as well as jodeling) were invented to communicate from mountainside to mountainside, it makes sense to them. Yes, kiddies, there was a time in history before cell phones and laptops and we all got along just fine!
Enjoy your new horn!

You're a creative fellow, Pitchy. Can you do In-a-gadda-da-vida?
As a side note...you may have a budding career in waste disposal.

Thanks guys, going to see if i can make a mouthpiece that makes a clear tone today.
I`m afraid the only thing mine will be used for is to verify to the neighbors just how crazy i am.But when you explain to them that these horns (as well as jodeling) were invented to communicate from mountainside to mountainside

Pitchy, my ex-wife's mother was a French hornist and also played her two alpenhorns regularly. Really nice instrument. If you can find a mouthpiece from a trumpet, trombone, baritone or bugle, you'll save yourself some work.

Cool Bill would love to watch someone play one in person, watched a bunch of solos on U-Tube that were very good.Bill in Oregon wrote:Pitchy, my ex-wife's mother was a French hornist and also played her two alpenhorns regularly. I have that trumpet mouthpiece but it`s a little small and high pitched for this horn, a tuba one or other large one would work but i`d have to drive at least 50 miles to round one up.
I`ll make up a few until i find the sweet spot, heck can`t play a note anyway so it don`t mater much.
Was just another one of those things i wanted to do.

Re: Made a Alpine Horn
I have a cousins husband who made a didgeridoo from pvc pipe. It's amazing just how much it sounded like his "real" ones. I wonder if folks playing that use the "circular breathing" technique that the didgerido players use?

Re: Made a Alpine Horn
Great work Pitchy. Bach makes very good mouthpieces but the best one I have is by Denis Wick, London (it's gold plated). Look on e-bay for tuba or sousaphone mouthpieces.

Be careful with that thing or you'll have college frat boys pouring beer down the funnel.
Re: Made a Alpine Horn
Jeepnik, i have made a couple pvc didgeridoo`s, they work nice.
M. M. Wright, i`ll check into that, i made three wood ones but i can`t get any decent sound out of the horn. If i hold my wood mouth pieces on the trumpet they make a real nice clear sound. So that tells me the Alpine horn isn`t working right either because it`s tin or maybe to long.
I might shorten it a little, it`s 12 feet long now.
Warhawk but i don`t indulge so i`m safe.
