Can you recommend a gunsmith to rebarrel a Win 9422 MXTR?

Post by Bayou Renaissance Man »

I lucked into an immaculate Winchester 9422 MXTR in .22 Magnum the other day. The gun was perfect except for one problem - a bulged barrel. I asked the dealer how much he wanted for it, expecting to hear a high figure (given its otherwise great condition, excellent wood, engraving, etc.), but he said casually that I could have it for $150! My wallet was in my hand almost before he finished speaking . . . :D

I've bought a new barrel from Gun Parts Corp. (just over $80 with shipping), and I'm now ready to get it re-barreled. Being a press-fit barrel, though, I want to make sure the job's done well. Local gunsmiths don't have the necessary jigs and tools to do it to my satisfaction, even though they promise to do their best. For a high-grade rifle like this I want it done properly!

Can anyone recommend a gunsmith who can put this barrel on for me, and at the same time check out the rifle thoroughly and smooth up anything that needs attention? Also, if you have any idea of the cost involved in re-barreling, please let me know - I haven't a clue.

I'm looking forward to getting this gun back into shootable condition. A .22 Magnum should be just about perfect for small varmints out to 150 yards or so - and the fact that it's a levergun is icing on the cake! :D

Many thanks.

Have you tried shooting it with the bulge? Sometimes they'll shoot fine. Good luck.

Up front I've probably never seen a 22 cal 94, just too new for my tastes, so keeping that in mind, a few questions.

Are you sure it’s a press fit? Reason I ask is if it’s a press fit, the frame may have expanded enough that the replacement bbl shank may be too small now.

Is the frame Al or steel?

Could it have been pinned in or loctited in?

A picture of the shank end of replacement bbl would be helpful.

If you look at Brownells schematics, there is part # 67 which is the barrel retaining pin. I bet it is a snug fit and pinned in.

The barrel is a snug press fit. I had the barrel removed from my 9422 for sight work and rebluing and there was no problems at all. The barrel has a small shoulder on the breach end with a notch for the retaining pin.

All Mdl 9422's have steel receivers.

Pinned, gunsmith made no mention of LocTite when we discussed mine.

Don't have a good one, wish I did.

I'm going out on limb and will say that any gunsmith who balks at doing a 9422 just doesn't want to take the time to do it. I'll also bet that a DIY'er could R&R the barrel without too much trouble with simple hand tools. Although, since I've never done it, don't take it for gospel.

There is a gunsmith in TN that is well recommended. He goes by the name of Gatguns over on Levergunlovers forum

Or you might contact Steve Young, he's a memember here, goes by the name Nate Kiowa Jones. http://www.stevesgunz.com/

Where abouts is the bulge/ring? I had a Rem pump in 22 that shot better after I ringed the barrel than before

Thanks for the expanation

Seems like a very easy barrel swap, one that even the home smith could do.
