New Old Colt SA 38WCF

Post by moodyholler »

Picked this up last week. Has been restored. Made in 1907, bright bore, and butter smooth action. Awfully nice to hack around though. Later, moodyholler

A beautiful old Colt, should be a fine carry piece.

mh,
Boy I like that. I'm a sucker for old Colts and really like the 38-40. Seems that a lot of the old lawdogs liked it too.
Do you mind saying who did the restoration, (if you know)? Looks like good work from here.

If you take a look at what many LEO's carry as duty ammo in their Glock 40's. You'll see many agencies carrying the S&W .40 cal w/ a 180 grain bullet (we carry Speer Gold-Dots in that configuration) you'll notice that it somewhat similar to a 38/40 -- law-dog approved in the past, sheepdog approved today-- Code-4

PS-- I for one, could ride patrol with that nice Colt, may need to borrow that for evaluation... :)

MM, rumor has it Turnbull and the gun was sold thru Kopec. I have no proof of any of that. Thanks for all the nice words. I really like 38-40 caliber myself. later, mh

Moodyholler, sounds like some correspondence to Turnbull is required.

Great looking old shooter! I had a chance to pick up a 1914 .38 W.C.F. SA at the Reno show that had been sent back to Hartford and rebuilt/refinished. It was priced at
$1400, but since it had a 5 1/2" barrel I passed. Had it been a 4 3/4" it would've been snapped up. :)

Mike, you're so picky. Geez............

just kidding. But, $1,400 for a first gen. even refurbished seems like a good deal.

If it hasn't been over sanded for pits, etc, in the process, it is a good deal. Yeah, I was going to say picky too :) I'm the other way around and picky for 5.5", but I'll take either in something like this!

No, it was a Colt factory rebuild and everything was perfect. The seller even had the original letter and the Colt refinish tag, too. I tried to get my cousin to buy it, but he had already committed to a 4 3/4" .44-40. Yes, I am too darned picky, although in my defense most of my ready cash was spent on 1886 stuff, including another .33 parts gun that one will soon enough morph into a .40-82. :)

I just noticed it's from the brief rounded triggerguard period. Extra dose of cool!

Just got a reply from Turnbull records and they did not do the resto. Wonder who else is doing this quality work? Thanks, moodyholler
