Moose hammer

Post by Marlin32 »

Just got home from Alberta on moose hunting expedition. Killed a 35" moose, about 850 pounds I am guessing. Hit him four times with 250grain remington bullets from a Marlin 338 ME XLR, at 266 yards. He was dead on first shot, but shot him three more times to get him down and out, died about 10 yards from first shot.

Longer shot than I wanted from that gun, wouldn't shoot it much farther out. But, moose down, freezer full.

Saw one fork horn mule deer, that is it. Saw wolf too, but no shot.

COOL. I can't imagine the physical labor involved in field dressing a moose, much less the rest of the butchering process...!

Good to hear the Marlin XLR did the job; I have one in .444 Marlin I'd use if I ever got to go after a Moose.

With that little cartridge, you might want to work on precision.  Are you sure that a .444 would do the job? (Just teasing)

I was northwest of Calgary about hour and a half to two hours. Near Caroline if looking at a map.

Will have to figure out how to post pictures.

I like this gun and caliber, but realize now that western big game, may need to ability to shoot a bit further than this 338ME will let me? Still figuring on that. Otherwise, if under 266 yards, it is dead critter, at least with the 250 Grainers. Would like to mess around and load 210 grain Hawk bullets in it. Should flatten it out a smidge, and still wop a moose or elk at that distance.

I use 210gr Nosler Partitions in my 338-06.. works very well at it's velocities... around 2600fps... Les

Very cool! Just got some meat from the moose today. Will probably eat some tomorrow.
Les, the 210 grain bullets might be an issue in the tubular magazine.
