1 in 14 twist in .250-3000

Post by dogwood2 »

In getting ready for Missouri deer season, I'm trying to find the right load for my '48 Savage 99 in .250-3000. It won't shoot the 100 grain Rem. power points. I bought a box and tried several combination of powders. 8" groups. Today I tried the 100 grain Win. Silvertip factory load. No luck there. That surprised me since my 1 in 14 twist Model 70 shoots them great. My local gunshop has 90 grain Sierra hollowpoints, and I may try those next. The rifle shoots my 75 grain hollowpoint handloads very accurately. Maybe I should just use those and be careful with my shots?

The 90 gr. Sierra is what was recommended to me. Just 3 gr. heavier than the old 87 gr. standard it SHOULD do well. My 1972 99A saddlegun does well with the Winchester 100 gr. factory load but it is a later gun with a faster twist rate.

Had the same problem. Mine is a Savage 99 '37 vintage when I hand loaded anything over 100 grains it just won't stabilize with that twist rate. I would have to push it hard but I don't want to do that to the old girl. I would try the 90 grain if possible but if that don't work, I would switch back to the model 70 and stick with the 100 grains. I would be a little leery using those 75 grain especially out past 100 yards or so.

I'd load some 87-90 soft points and go for it the 250 is a excellent hunting round. danny

Mine is dated to 1956...and shoots 87 grain Hornady and Speer bullets with equally stunning accuracy.

Good luck with yours.

Someone here sent me PMs with info about good success to quite long range with that weight class of bullets.

Had one with the 1 in 14 twist and got the 8 to 10" groups just like you did with 100 grain bullets but the 87 grain Sierra was extremely accurate. I mean dime sized groups at 100 yds. Killed a bunch of whitetails and coyotes with it. Seldom had one untrack after being hit.
