The Spanish Tigre copy (in 44-40) may be what you're thinking of.

I kept thinking El Diablo and I knew that wasn't right...

So they were Spanish, not Mexican?

I just picked up an early El Tigre (20"barrel) the quality isn't as good as a Winchester, but it is better than the recent 92 copies. Most that I see have seen some hard use.
