question about Winchester Big Bores

Post by Streetstar »

I have enjoyed the thread about the doc's new 375 BB, but it brought to mind a question i had -- and i didn't want to drift the existing thread off track

But - why is a .307 considered a "big bore" rifle when it is not really ?

It's on the "Big Bore" receiver, capable of handling not only larger-caliber chamberings like the .375 but higher-pressure chamberings, as well.

First, it isn't off topic.

Second, the reference is to the rifle not the cartridge (as noted immediately previously).

"Big Bore" is a Winchester trade mark name and as Hobie says, it pertains to the rifle.

In my experience a big bore (as to a general description) rifle or sixgun starts with .40-----Sixgun
1st. Gen. Colt SAA’s, 1878 D.A.45 and a 38-55 Marlin TD
