Rossi Puma question
I have an older Rossi in 44 mag, Rifle shoots well, but last couple of times out I get a light primer strike, no ignition every once in a while, maybe one out of 9 or ten shots.Every thing apears intact, and its clean and well lubed. Any ideas?

Re: Rossi Puma question
Have you cleaned the gunk out of the firing pin channel in the bolt?
Has someone done an "action job" and lightened the springs?
If the ammo is reloaded, are you sure the primers are fully seated below flush?
Those are the only things I can come up with right now.

Re: Rossi Puma question
I'll second what J Miller says. If it's reloaded ammo, the primer not seated quite all the way can give you that symptom. New cases, especially, sometimes take quite a lot of primer-seating pressure to get 'em fully seated. Reloads that don't quite chamber 100% fully can also do that.
And if you're using factory ammo, I have found that Remington primers take a significantly harder blow to set off than CCI, Winchester, or Federal (I tested those brands with a home-grown primer testing machine last winter for some wild project of the moment).
Check the ammo first, then go to the gun.

Re: Rossi Puma question
This batch of reloads is running fine in my SBH and Model 29, so I would not think that was the problem. I took it all the way down and clean when I first got it last year, and have only put about 200 rounds through it, I guess it might have built up enough crud in the bolt to cause it, so I will break it down again. It does have a pretty slick action, a lot smoother than my brothers 357 so some one might have done some tweaking so that might be an issue also.

Re: Rossi Puma question
Rossis are known to break firing pins. Or it could have become slightly deformed and isn't protruding quite as far as it used to. Open the breach and push forward on the back of the pin as far as you can... how far does it stick out in front of the bolt face? Point it muzzle down... does it fall out? Even if it doesn't come completely out; but protudes from the bolt face, this indicates a break.
Also, "...well lubed..." could indicate that's it's actually over lubed. If it doesn't indicate a broken pin, it's probably due for a teardown and thorough cleaning, then a light lubing on wear points only as it's reassembled.

Re: Rossi Puma question
Just guessing but in a lot of cases this is a broken firing pin problem. It wouldn't hurt to take a look.

I think it could be a broke firing pin too. But, you method won't work. With the action open there is a passive safety built into the lever that prevents the firing pin from moving forward. so, when open you won't be able to check FP protrusion. If the FP is boke in the middle about all you can do is remove the bolt and check it.

Re: Rossi Puma question
Thanks Nate, I forgot about that hump in the lever. Gotta have the lever out. The only broke one I've personally encountered was where the tip broke off at the body. But it was damaged enough that it wouldn't come out the front.
