30-30 Winchester does it again.

Post by win38-55 »

Went out over the weekend in Northern Michigan for an early antlerless hunt.
Sunday morning I shot on a nice size doe. I was using a Marlin 336 ss in the grand ol 30-30win, with a leopold 3x9 scope.
Shot was taken at appx 50 yds in a hay field. I screwed up a bit because this gun is sighted in to shoot at 100 dead on.
So figuring that I dropped the cross hairs at the bottom of the deer just behind the front leg and let one fly. The shot ended
up hitting a tad bit lower that expected. So a very long tracking job was involved. IMHO this is not normal for a 30-30
just a bad hit in this case. We eventually tracked her down with the help of my Indian Tracking partner/hunting buddy.
We were both glad she expired just 5 feet from the road, thak god for that. All in all it was an awesome hunt.
Cannot wait for the real deer season to get here. :D :D :D :D :D

Silly man! Haven't you been reading your glossy gun rags, a 30-30 won't kill a deer anymore, the bullets bounce right off. GEEEZ some people trying to make us think he did that with a30-30.

OK I was the one who started it this year!
Good way to start the year congrats.

Good Job on tracking it down and not leaving it saying Oh Well musta missed. At least U didn't try it with a 25-20. We would not have believed U.

Good morning & thanks for the pictures. No reason the 30-30 will not keep on harvesting any critter out there... Only thing better is a .38 caliber rifle.

Thanks for all of the replys. I do love my 30-30 for deer hunting. I have lots of different calibers
I could use, but for some reason I grab the 30-30 every time. I dont know why it just seems like the right thing to shoot a deer with. :D :D :D Thanks again.

Congrats! What was the load? It should've only been about an inch low at 50 IIRC.

It seems to be traditional. They also say "he was a hard worker" too. When my time comes I don't mind if they say I look good but at that point, d**mit I'm resting in peace. Don't be bringing up any of that hard work stuff! :P

Congrats! It seems the only folks that're surprised the .30-30 is still a game-getter, are those that believe everything they read!

30-30 has always been a good choice. Years ago, I was stationed at Wurtsmuth AFB, Michigan and hunted every chance I got within Huron Nat'l Forest. My rifle was a used but not abused Remington pump in 35 with plain open sights. It always got the job done for me. My hunting partners favored scoped lever action 30-30's but my Boss hunted with a Remington auto-loader in 6mm. We enjoyed many successful hunts together.

Thanks for sharing your photo and story! Its always pleasant to hear from those of the far north.

Thought it looked like it... spent a few years there myself....Just kidding.. remember, we talked about who your relatives were up there via pm... I grew up there.. graduated from EJHS.. raised four kids about 6 miles north of town.. moved to Wyoming in 1990 and try to get back to muzzleloader season each Dec... I'll be back again Dec 9 or 10 for five days of hunting on the family farm.. Les
