It's been Bubba'd to the second power!!!

Some of that "nice file work"

Anyway,

I've mentioned my Dad's eccentric friend Bob here before. The guy has been buying and " Bubba'ing" guns for
decades. Dad told him we were going to have a table at the Ohio Gun Collectors show in October and Bob gave him a
box of stuff to sell.
My Dad called and told me about the stuff. He said you wouldn't believe what this guy did to a Colt Python!

Now I've wanted a Python as long as I've wanted a Single Action Army!
To me They are the Cadillac of Sixguns.

The goofball had cut off the barrel @ 2". Rounded off the back strap. Fitted a pair of black MOP grips and messed with
the timing.

I can live with the "round Butt" but it needs a new barrel preferrably a 4". Along with a refinish, new rear sight, and timing / action work.

Question is;

Is it worth a work over or should we part it out?

I think I'd like to make a custom/re-work out of it. I can buy it for next to nothing and I hate to
admit but the work he did on the grip frame fits my had perfectly.

I'm pretty sure I know what I want to do with it but would love to hear your thoughts and opinions!

"Next to nothing" sounds like a good price.

Be advised, it's hard to get Colts timed. I have heard rumours that the factory doesn't even work on them any longer, and parts are very hard or impossible to get. Even good Smith gunsmiths generally won't work on Colt DA's, they are very fussy about how they time. I understand that one part has 4 surfaces that have to all be timed just right for the gun to function. I don't have comfirmation on the parts/factory work matter, but check it out if you want to get it up and running again. A barrel should be available somewhere, at some point if you keep looking.

I'm not the one to ask. I bought my Python in 1982 for $279.00 new in the box. How much is the goof ball asking for it. I would put a 6" barrel on it.

Left my stupid camera on the kitchen counter!! Ugh!

Anyway,
I can probably get it for $100. It's probably worth that just for parts.

Still debating on whether I want it or not.

What really makes me crazy is he had a couple of Taurus snub nose titanium
revolvers that were completely untouched! What a goof!
One is a .45 Colt! My dad snagged that one. He just got his concealed carry permit and liked that
big hole in the end of the barrel. :D

For $100, you should get it. Barrels aren't that uncommon. You're right, if it doesn't work out you can part it out and more than get your money back.

For $100 I would buy it for parts if nothing else.

I have had mixed results with Pythons. I have a 6" bbl, I lost in the Great D-Vorce of 94 and it lived up to it's reputation. I have had another 6" and two 4" Pythons and while good enough guns, they were not special. A good run-or-the-mill Smith and Wesson would be just as good or better.

You're welcome my friend. I know of GC's work on Python's from a friend of mine in Chi-town, he's had two or three Pythons worked over by Grant, very impressive work.

OD,

thanks for the link. I think that just made up my mind. I'll come up with a barrel. I'd like it to be a 4" but I won't be choosey.

Oh yeah, I remember it, they would also install Python barrels on Rugers, referred to them as Cougers.

After seeing the pictures, I would gladly give $100 for that. Put a front sight on it, fix the timing issues and leave the rest as is.

The major Colt smiths years ago would never put another manufacturers barrel on a Python. Sacrilege. I have a 4 inch Python and it shoots like a dream with its favourite loads. I would do my utmost to get that Python in top line condition again. In the US there still has to be smiths who still know the majic of tuning a Python. Cunningham comes to mind. Why not get a quote from Colt themselves, theres not too much they cannot fix with a couple of hours labour at most, plus parts. The rear sight looks like the standard Elliason and looks good, new 4 inch barrel would be sweet, plus a reblue of frame/cylinder then look at grips that fit.
Its not totally beyond redemption, if I lived in the US I would offer you 200 for that piece no worries. What date build is she?

Why would you need a front site on a barrel that short?

Boy, I guess times are really really getting tough :o
Anyhow, screw the timing thing will that gun throw one down the tube every time you pull the trigger.
Might be the best carry gun you ever owned.
In my parts just the Name(Colt Python)is worth $300

Howdy,
Got one in 1968 when I was 17. Gave my dad $176.00 and got a python, 6" barrel with a box of 38's and a box of 357's out the door new  . Learned the value of reloading the same year!
First firearm I ever bought and still have it, special to me.

But for $100? I'd take it in a NY minute and fix it up.

At least just put a new barrel on it or minimum, install a front sight blade.
