1895 tang crack repaired

Post by dave in maine »

fixed by a knowledgable wood worker he put the butt in a vice put a wedge in to spread the crack in the reciever area heated the wood, mixed epoxy, heated same poured it in the crack while forcing it in with his air compressor. sure beats $599 for a synthetic stock. it's hardly noticable. if you want to see some incredible work go to donovan's bench.

Thats the way I've been doing it for 30 years, only I add walnut dust in with the wood glue.----------Sixgun

Cool! Much better than a synthetic stock on such a classic!

If the cracks are just cracks with no wood loss I fix them with super glue. Spread them and use a syringe to inject the glue into the cracck, then clamp it and let it sit. Afterwards it's stronger than before.
If they're more open or older cracks I use the epoxy method also.
