OT - Dual Survival on Discovery...Anyone watch this?
I've only recently discovered the show, and have really come to enjoy it. I love the fact that it shows two different philosophies in regards to surviving an emergency situation. I get way more information from this show than from watching Bear Grylls on Man vs. Wild, even though I like the show for the entertainment value.
I've read up a lot about Cody Lundin, the barefoot hippie on the show, and while I definitely don't agree with him on everything spiritually, he's got an intriguing way of living his life that I can certainly respect. He lives in an underground house in the middle of the desert in Arizona. He uses almost no electricity and collects all his own food and water. If you want to know how to survive a situation with nothing, this seems like the guy to learn from.
Dave Canterbury is his partner on the show, and is an Army trained sniper and outdoorsman. He has a more "in-your-face", "get it done" type philosophy. I had heard of Dave and watched some of his youtube videos before he started doing the show.
I've come to realize that it may be a good idea to brush up on some of these skills and techniques. I find it a fun thing to do in my spare time, and it certainly doesn't hurt to be prepared.
Anyway, I'm rambling now. Just wanted to know if anyone else has seen the show. If so, what are your thoughts?

I will have to look it up and tell the DVR to go get me the next episode. Thanks. I watched many of the Survivorman episodes with Les Stroud. He was less entertaining than Bear Grylls but seemed more practical.

Did you see the one where Dave cuts his arm with his knife on purpose and then uses gunpowder and fire to seal it. Had to do it twice though to get it to work.

I get more out of Dual Survival than I did out of Survivorman. Possibly because the show is more entertaining to me, and I pay closer attention. It is well worth recording, IMO.Rimfire McNutjob wrote:I will have to look it up and tell the DVR to go get me the next episode. Thanks. I watched many of the Survivorman episodes with Les Stroud. Just watched that one last night. Not sure if I would have done that just for educational purposes, but at least I've seen it done and know it works.WCF3030 wrote:Did you see the one where Dave cuts his arm with his knife on purpose and then uses gunpowder and fire to seal it. Definitely enjoy it more than Man vs Wild or Survivorman. Both of them have interesting points of view, and I can learn something from each of them.

I DVR the show regularly. Love the special points each of them bring to the table. Fire starting is a personal strength I have and it's good to see them use so many different methods. I respect Cody's philosophy but I'm a ***** and I gotta wear shoes or boots. No barefoot here.

Nope, just another "reality TV" show. How bad can it be if no one ever dies? Must not be much "threat" to ones survival. Plus who's filming the darned thing? You think the crew is roughing it? Heck, they probably head back to the 5th wheel for beer and BBQ after the day's filming.

I was just going to post on Dave's site tonight in a thread here. I have been enjoying his 300+ you tube videos. I have modified one of my slingshots and a half dozen arrows to his specs for shooting big game, I've made several of his sweedish arrows (pathfinder darts), fishing rig and I happen to agree with many of his must haves for his survival gear. His 10 C's for what should go in surviver bags are right on and my bag in my truck carries all 10 plus a few. Anyway, the show is designed to teach, not to reflect they are actually surviving. In fact it has a disclamor in the beginning. Education wise, I find it very entertaining.

My boys and I enjoy the show. Cody is a real character with a good amount of sand in him.

i don't agree with either dave or cody 100%, but

I love the show. I have it set on my DVR and me and the wife and kids watch it all the time.
I love the contrast between Dave and Cody......Marine/Hippie......makes for some funny stuff. Each respects the others way and they get the job done.
I would like to go hunting with Dave. That man flat out gets it done.

I like the show probably the closest I will get to a wilderness survival situation. Good to see a Democrat and Republican working together.

Re: OT - Dual Survival on Discovery...Anyone watch this?
Love the show and have followed it since the beginning. It is neat to see the two philosophies in action. I have a lot of respect for both, but you have to love how Cody believes what he believes, yet remains pretty non judgmental towards Dave. Both men seem to be class acts, at least as presented on the show.

I watch strictly for entertainment value, I don't take either of them seriously.
My favorite is Englishman Ray Mears as far as real knowledge of outdoors survival is concerned. Bear Grylls a joke with no punchline.

Well, I guess I'm a minority of one! Still, how can they call them "survival" shows if no one ever fails (dies). It can't be that bad. Now if you add the prodding of someone shooting at them (I'm thinking of the show where some old guy on horse is chasing a couple of fellows) that might make them truely "survival" shows.

I don't have cable but I tried looking some of the stuff up on their site and there wasn't much there.

You're right, there's not much on their website, but you can watch full episodes here http://www.ovguide.com/tv_season/dual-s ... n-2-166991Rusty wrote:I don't have cable but I tried looking some of the stuff up on their site and there wasn't much there.
You can also go to Youtube and search for Dave Canterbury. His Pathfinder school has a whole channel with hundreds of videos about various topics. Hope that helps.
