Latest addition to "winny" family

Post by longarm4146 »

A look at my latest finds. I know that muskets are not as desirable as carbines or rifles but this one was to nice to pass up. I hope to one day maybe be able to upgrade to something more easily used in cowboy action shooting. We've never had a bayonet charge at cowboy match yet. This one is un touched and has a pristine bore, with original cleaning rods as well. The shotgun just helps complete the battery.

I think your musket version would be very desirable to quite a few people. It would be to me.

You're right, I guess i really need to clarify what I was saying. It seems that carbines and standard rifles in comprable condition seem to bring better prices. I like the musket and it'll wear out a 12" steel target at 200 yds if you do your job.
I think the fact that they were never adopted by our milatary shrinks the pool of collectors. This is a 1903 gun and I'm proud to own it, but I'd really love to have a 24" octagon in comparable condition, but not likely to be able to afford one anytime soon. 8)

Wow! You hit the jackpot with those two! I really like the '73 musket and would be thrilled to own one. The leveraction shotgun has been on my want list for several years. Beautiful old classic Winchesters!

Thanks Kirk, you should've seen the looks I got when I rolled up to the firing line at a local cowboy match with that 73, alternating between the '87 and a grade 3 1889 Remington double barrel. Can't shoot a lick but really racked up the style points.

Me, too. But I like what I like, not what everyone likes.

Nice 73 there.

I'm surprised the muskets are less money than regular rifles, they made far fewer of them. I think they are very cool. If faced with the chpice between similar guns, I'd likely choose the mucket. Yours looks to be in very good condition, (are those original case colors still showing on the receiver?) much above what most 73's I've seen.

Isnt it amazing how many people post without reading the thread?

Malamute, I not sure but i think that the muskets all came with blued receivers and on mine what your looking at is the mix of original finish and the wear that comes from a hundred plus years of handling. As far as rarity only 5% of 73s made were in musket variety and most went out of country and never cme back so you'd think that they would be fairly sought after guns. I would guess that one of the reasons that the rifles and carbines are so much more interestin g is the number of variations and options available, not so much with muskets......just my guess. In my conversations with collectors and historians it pretty clear to me that in most cases a rifle or carbine in the same shape as my musket would prolly bring a grand or so more, unless you found someone who needed a musket for some reason. i feel like I have something kinda special, espicially with the bayonet and cleaning rods and it's take something real sweet to get it from me......You know it would kinda look sweet in KirkD's next calendar...hehe
