OT: Glen Campbell and Kim Darby on TRUE GRIT

Post by J Miller »

Just found this interesting considering how much we've been discussing the two TRUE GRIT movies.

'True Grit' memories from Kim Darby and Glen Campbell
I find it fascinating that of all the actors complained about in the original True Grit, both Kim Darby and Glen Campbell had trouble with director Henry Hathaway. Then add to that the fact that TRUE GRIT was Campbell's first acting gig and we might have a clue why his performance wasn't as good as we'd liked.

Glen Campbell has Alzheimer's, plans for final album and farewell tour
This I'm sorry to hear. I've enjoyed his music for ever.

I believe the reason Glen Campbell was offered the part...
was because of his big time music and tv career at the time...
Played a pretty good tune....
but sure needed some work in the acting department....
Still love the movie!

I heard that news today also...
wonder how old he is....70 something?

just found out...75

I too always enjoyed his music. You've got to wonder how much his heavy drug & alchohol use has affected his later years.

Throwing a popular singer in the bag was a sweetener for movies... Didn’t matter how bad the acting was...
Fabian...Ricky Nelson... Glenn Campbell... Window dressing for the girls.... Gawwd, the worst thing that could happen in a Cowboy movie when I was a kid, was when the singing would start!..

You forgot Bobby Vinton, he was in two JW westerns: Train Robbers and Big Jake. Thankfully he didn't sing.

Yes he could. And then there was Walter Brennan, he was also a recording artist. Remember the song "Dutchman's Gold"? Boy was that tear jerker.

The list of singers who could act is pretty short IMHO. Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, and... well there must be someone else.

Ricky Nelson wasn't on the list and yes I have Rio Bravo.

I always liked Kristofferson's acting - liked his music better.

If you didn't like Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson and Walter Brennen's singing in Rio Bravo, and I admit it may not be the right singing for the time, I recken you gotta be hard to please, I love it, often put the movie on just to listen to them sing.

Levon Helm (of The Band) - his speaking voice is like butter and Delta syrup all mashed together and spread on a hot biscuit.

(in The Right Stuff he gave Beeman's to Chuck Yeager)

In a few of those old, B-Movie John Wayne movies of the 30s, he would sing...Oh, My.... :(
