bore

Post by Mescalero »

Some time ago I found a .358 Savage 99 in my gunsmiths junk pile.
The bore has stuff in it, I have been gentle with it.
The most aggressive thing I have used in it has been J.B. bore paste.
Anybody have a suggestion about something to clean up this bore without harming it?

What kind of stuff? Copper fouling or leading? Small animals?

I used one of the foaming bore cleaners on a GEW88 and cleaned it up nice. Just can't remember which one I used...

Might try some copper mesh scourer and run it up and down the bore a few passes and see what you get to come out. You might also try and find someone with a borescope.

Is that better/different than the bronze-wool you can get from Brownell's (or the local ACE hardware)...? I've found that stuff inexpensive and very helpful in the gun room.

Make sure you buy the all Copper Chore Boy, not the plated steel. The best indication is the Copper will be twice the price of the plated steel scrubber.

Wrap strands around an old bronze bore brush, keep it dry and go at it. Once you get most of the lead out, switch to Hoppes & Kroil a 50-50 mixture. I use an old bore mop for this application. Let it set & soak over night, repeat as necessary. Then Lastly, follow-up with J-B bore paste.

I have a Chex-Mauser 98 V-22 made in 1929, the bore looked very bad. Not leaded but very much fouled. I pulled 70 Years of grud out of that bore. I thought I'd never get all the Green & blue out of the bore. It now shoots acceptable groups at 200 yards.

In the past I have cleaned up some pretty nasty milsurp rifle bores using an electric bore cleaning which utilizes reverse electrolysis. These are easy to make from any old recharger of proper DC voltage output and a simple piece of steel rod and will clean out an unbelievable amount of stuff in just a few hours. If you have ever seen a milsurp rifle bore which has not been properly cleaned after firing corrosive military ammo you will know how they can seem like lost.

Stan maybe detailed instructions with a few pictures of your set up would help.

Get a can of "Wipe Out" and liberally spray into the barrel, seal end of barrel so it can work over night and next day carefully run a couple dry patches down it. If this does the trick run a lightly oiled patch down it(Rem Oil) afterwards and leave it that way until you plan to shoot it(then use a clean dry patch)

I have seen that Wipe Out remove very nasty stuff

A patch with some Brasso on it will work wonders.

If it's lead I'd use the copper / bronze scrubbers wrapped around an old brush.
But, use it dry. I've found that when using it with solvent the solvent acts as a lubricant and the scrubbers just slide right over.
Do it dry and the strip the lead right out.

I use Chore Boy (on real bad leaded bores) and Wipe Out (liquid version) exclusively. Chore Boy can also be used to remove surface rust (oil surface first) w/o harming the bluing. I know I have sung the praises of Wipe Out before, but if you havn't - give it a try.

Like earlier suggested, CR-10 - here's a link http://barnesbullets.myshopify.com/prod ... eaner-8-oz .

I use CR-10 per the directions, then run a wet patch of Hoppe's #9, followed by a dry patch , and I'm done.

When shopping for Chore Boy pads take a magnet along to test for the copper plated steel impostors.
