OT--Lightest 375 H&H bullet available?

Post by getitdone1 »

What's the lightest 375 H&H bullet available? I believe they once loaded a 235 grain but could be mistaken. All I'm aware of are the 270 and 300 gr weights.

Edit: I should have consulted my reloading books before posting this. I see Barnes has a 210 gr XFB .375 bullet. Hornady offers a 220 and 225 and Speer has a 235.

Well, maybe this will be of use to some of you. Anyone make lighter bullets than these--and fragile?

One use for such a bullet would be to see just how devastating/wicked/explosive a cartridge and load could be on vegetables, water bottles and an occasional varmit. Right now my 243/55 gr and 45-70 300 hp are the champions.

A .375 cast round ball? They weigh about 100 grains.

FWIW...the Hornady offerings are built for the slower velocity of the .375 Winchester, NOT for the .375 H&H. I've used those in a .375 JDJ 14" Contender with good results. I've also used the Speer 235 in Africa out of my .375 H&H, also with good results.

Hornady makes a 225 that was originally the "light" bullet for the 376 Steyr. I have done terminal tests on it and kept within the design limitations( <2500fps impact), it's not a bad bullet. Even when loaded in the Steyr, they kept the 225 at the same velocity as their heavier bullet (270 I think). More intended for lighter gaame and for lighter recoil. I wouldn't call it an elk bullet but if loaded to stay within design limits, it would do OK. Good pig and deer bullet but no, it is not "explosive" unless driven (and impacts) at top H&H velocities.

You want LIGHT and FAST...?

Get a .45 or .50 caliber large-case round like .45-70 or .500 S&W, preferably in a breakopen single-shot, put a sabot in it like you'd use for your black-powder gun, and maybe a sabot within that sabot, and you can get down to a 125-grain pistol bullet in .357, sitting atop a pile of powder in that .45-70 case...

Granted, if you really want to mess around that, get a wildcat-chambered barrel in one of the 6mm's made from a belted magnum case, and really go to town!

I have a friend that used the Speer 235 in the old Interarms Whitworth Mark X I had for shooting groundhogs .

In that same Interarms rifle and my present Ruger #1H I use the no longer made Nosler 260 grain Ballistic Tip with very satisfying results on paper and deer .

Should I ever need a more stout bullet or my supply of these bullets run out I'll go to the Nosler 260 grain Partition or 260 AccuBond as both shoot the same charge very well with the same POI in my Ruger .

I have shot the Barnes 210 gr on white tails with good results. I load 77 gr. of RL-15 and get approx. 3000 fps with very good accuracy. This load doesnt recoil a whole lot and is fun to shoot. I have shot several deer in the neck from 75 to 150 yds and they tip over. Its a fun load but Barnes bullets arent the cheapest thing out there to shoot.

speer 235 grain is lightest on my shelf. However, the 255 or 200 grain 375 winchester bullets driven hard would be very explosive.
