Win mod 55/30 WCF "Score"

Post by pwl44m »

Picked this up last week.Over all pretty nice Gun for the money. Blue on barrel is nice after a little WD and a wipe down, recvr is mottled rust-blue and white.action is tight but trigger seems a little light. I am sure someone stuck that fat forearm on it (comments) it feels good but just doesn't look right. Bore shows full potential with lite rust which should clean right out. I like the Buckhorn Sight which is a Marbles. The only Gun I have with a full B-horn.
The Guy brought 5 Guns for Me to look at - an SKS which I had no desire for as it had a Pistol grip stock and converted to Mag feed - A Hawthorn 22 - an O3 sporterized - a British 303 - a Rem 740 n 06 ( which I bought ) and the 55.
He had stored some of these Guns in Hard Cases causing the rust. The 740 was dripping with water and had surface pitting.Don't know how well it will clean up.
Any how here r some pics ( I should have reread the thread about takin Gun Pics ) lol

You're right about that forearm. It does look out of place. But, Hey if it feels OK then why change it. Otherwise it looks like you've got a nice rifle there. Let us know how it shoots.

Interesting piece - I for one like wide fore ends.

Well, we can surely agree someone didn't like the original forearm! Precision Gun Works doesn't currently have the rapid taper forend. I'd email and ask. IMO, since your gun will never be "original", to me, it's a prime candidate for restoration. The following might explain why soeone used that 2x4:

No, and yes, the mdl 55 didn't use a specific forearm, it used the same as that vintage mdl 94. But both could vary by length and barrel taper. Measure the distance from the front of the receiver to the back of the forend cap, that'll tell you the length you need; check the barrel diameter at the forend cap and that'll tell you if you need the standard or "pencil" forend. IIRC they are ~11". I've never owned a mdl 55, & don't know what all tapers were used, but unlike the mdl 64, it's forearm outside dimenions were the same as the 94.

I "'spose", to be "PC" or polite, I should add: YMMV. :P

p.s.: "PC" in Griff's Dictionary of Contrarian Terms means "public cowardice"!

Looks like the forearm came from a Model 93 Marlin stock purchase premium .410; as Griff noted, a reproduction Winchester 94 or 64 forearm should be able to be fitted to your rifle. Is the forearm cap original?

Good luck with your find.

airedaleman- as far as I can tell the cap looks right and the blue matches the barrel. It looks like they fitted the forearm with a Hatchett .
