Completely off topic and I hope you'l forgive me, but we just returned from a week on Kauai and I thought I'd share two pics with you all. I got absolutely ZERO chances to shoot anything and given the wild chickens running all over the island (including the one that would crow outside my window starting at 5AM...) that is a dreadful shame! Next time I'm bringing a wrist rocket and I WILL have some "free range" chicken for dinner.
Napali Coast as seen from Waimea Canyon on a hike:
Napali Coast as seen hiking along it (beautiful trail that kicked my arsh - I'm so out of shape it's sad):
Went there a few years back, what a beautiful island. We had a great time but found it took a couple of days to 'kick-back'. Hopefully going back after the first of the year.
Thanks for the great pictures!!

Absolutely gorgeous! Honeymooned there in Dec '84, back when it wasn't quite "found" yet (except by now well known motion pictures)--the honeymoon was great, but alas didn't last much past our return to "real life"! But...I figure the statute of limitations on such things is passed by now though and am definitely overdue for a return!
I believe your first shot is from the end of the road on the west (dry) side - about where Harrison Ford and Anne Heche saw the pirates way down below? And your second shot looks like maybe over by Ke'e beach on the other (eastern trailhead) side of Na Pali on the "North Shore", one of my favorite spots in the world--or the parts I've seen anyway! How close am I?
A favorite for movie producers. Once there you can see why. I think they like the ability to film south seas and jungle scenes - with relatively easy and cheap access from the mainland, and be able to yell "cut!" and be drinking margaritas at the hotel in ten minutes! Some of the better known I recall:
- South Pacific
- Blue Hawaii (Elvis)
- Donovan's Reef (Wayne/Marvin)
- Raiders of the Lost Ark (opening scenes)
- Uncommon Valor
- Jurassic Park (and at least one of the sequels if not more)
- Six Days, Seven Nights (H. Ford, Anne Heche)
- Some "Lost" TV episodes
- Probably some old and new Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum
- Added - Thornbirds - beach cabin and "From Here to Eternity"-like tryst scene (Chamberlain/Ward) - Ke'e Beach.

Nice pics - thanks. In your first pic from the top of the canyon, on a clear day you can see Niihau, the Forbidden Island: http://www.aloha-hawaii.com/kauai/niihau/

Thanks! The first shot was taken from a ridgeline trail in Waimea Canyon where we had gone for a day hike. Here is a shot of the canyon from another vantage point and looking in pretty much the opposite direction from that first shot:
You nailed the second shot! Ke'e Beach for sure.

We were up at the Westin Princeville villas. It's part of our timeshare network and we were pleased to give it a looksee, but I have to say that it rained far too much for my tastes and I prefer the Poipu area. Nice place however:
Ah yes, Ke'e Beach! I edited my earlier film list to include "The Thornbirds" - beach cabin and "From Here to Eternity"-like tryst scene (Chamberlain/Ward) - Ke'e Beach.
And you can see why, one of the very nicest of settings anywhere.
I was at Schofield Bks in 73 - 74, but even way back then, my but was Oahu a commercial vacation trap....all the military didn't help a bit, and the locals hated our guts....The other islands were heaven to get away to.

Both my wife's parents were born on Kaua'i so have plenty family from her side still there. I have a cousin in Hanalei too. Nice island much less developed than Maui or even the Big Island. Kaua'i the only island with Blacktail Deer but very difficult hunting in heavy brush. Also the only island with Rainbow Trout fishing open to public, short 1 month season in August I believe. Wild Chickens everywhere because also the only island where the Indian Mongoose was NOT introduced. Great goat and pig hunting.
