question
Some time back I asked about feral hog, where to shot, what caliber, etc.
It generated a fair amount of discussion, but little on subject practical information.
Thought I would re-ask the question.
Anatomy and caliber suggestion,please.

Re: question
It would be easier to go to Basha's and buy a pork roast.

The pork roasts at Bash's are not tearing up the countryside.

Re: question
This little piggy went to market
This little piggy stayed home
This little piggy had roast beef
This little piggy had none
And this little piggy ran into the business end of a Remington .30-06 150g Core-Lokt PSP doing roughly 2600fps out of a sporterized Smith-Corona 1903A3:

Look at that face! Look at those teeth! (The boar's, not mine!):

Took him broadside just behind the shoulder.

Re: question
OK, I didn't understand. I'd like to get into that myself, I'd like to go kill a pest or three. But I ain't gonna pay no stinking rancher to do it.

Re: question
.35 Rem in the ear, or when broadside and they are rooting(nose in the dirt) just behind the front shoulder at about their eye level.
Gotta say, another great weapon for hogs where semi's are allowed especially in denser cover is a open sighted 20ga Rem 1100 (I like the Hastings barrel on it)using the .454 Dia. 260gr bonded Remington Premier Core-Lokt Ultra bullets (1900-2000fps)
Basically its a semi .454 Casull but with no kick and very accurate out to 100yards (and its fast if a follow shot is needed with no muzzle jump)

Re: question
I wouldn't mind hunting some feral hogs, but I don't want them anywhere around where I live. Have gun will travel....

Re: question
My Marlin 375 with it's 220gr FNs @ 2150fps do quite the number on piggies when hit right behind the shoulder... range's got to be w/in 75 yards... for my shootin' tho'... not the rifle. Beyond that, offhand, I'd rather not attempt a shot. Like Kim said... "have gun, will travel!"

Re: question
Their hearts are low and forward in the chest. People shoot them with just about anything from .223- the ubermags. I usually take something in the 30cal plus range with my 45colt 94 trapper being my favorite.

Re: question
Short answer: in the ear, in the heart=lung, in the neck - your choice. And caliber? Any deer hunting caliber.
I personally shoot them in the heart-lung just like I shoot deer. And a lever action 44 Mag or equivalent is a great, fast-shooting choice for hunting them. I use a heavy solid cast boolit.
I have a pic of me with a boar too but I won't bore you with that

Re: question
I have two lever .44's a Rossi,& a Marlin.
Also lots of cast bullet loads.

Re: question
The first one Jr. shot was at about 20 yards with his Rossi in .44 mag. He put it right behind the ear and it litterally looked like it's feet were jerked out from under it. The next one he shot with the same rifle at about 35 yards and hit it a little further back than was optimum but we still only had to trail it 50-60 yards before we found it piled up.
I think a lot of people have the misconception that all hogs have a gristle plate. Not so, in my experience the plate isn't an issue till they start getting north of 150-175 pounds. Given the choice I'd rather have one less that 100 pounds anyway.

first pic is the hog, then with it skinned, then shoulder removed, so on and so on.There is a good

Re: question
I shot a #250 sow behind the shoulders and #300 boar between the eyes both with a 30-30 170gr rem cor-loc in front of 29gr of IMR 30-31 and combined they did not go 3 feet.
With the sow it blew right through and v splattered blood over the ferns.
The boar was lying down popping its teeth and the bullet went through the skull, all the way down the neck and was bulging in the skin at the shoulder.

Re: question
I kind of like my Marlin 1985g with a 430gr paper patch cast from air cooled wheel weights. Loaded to just a bit over 1900fps works well.

Re: question
Mescalero, your .44's with factory loads or hard cast reloads will do just fine. Just keep an out for that cat, if he's still around.

357 mag and up and right behind and just below the ear....
saves the meat...
Whacked one a couple years ago with a muzzle loader with 44mag in a sabot....
dropped right there....
The heart is kinda between the shoulders and a bit forward...
they may run off if your too far back...The near front leg should be forward
when you shoot.

Re: question
The wild hogs are everywhere here in East Texas. The hunt is 'on' around here every saturday mornin. Dogs, radios, tracking collars, gps', everything that you can think of. Killed 5 this past saturday and all was over 200 lbs.

Re: question
Unfortunatly I think we are headed that way.
Re: question
I have 4 places I will shoot a boar hog. Head on, centered just below the ears. From the side, in the ear hole, the neck, or my favorite. My favorite is in the "arm pit" so to speak. When the hog steps forward with the leg on your side he exposes a spot where there is little hair and no shield. The hogs heart is in the upper part of that "arm pit".
Sows, you can shoot any place you would shoot a deer. Sows do not have shields.
My biggest hog and it was a boar. Two of us had to field dress him before we could lift him to the tailgate. Even then it was quite a job. The gun was a Ruger 77 in 7MM Remington with 160 gr Nosler Partitioned. Neck shot.. It was getting dark and the rascal didn't have any ears to see.

I guess just about any centerfire cartridge will do a good job on a hog as long as you are a cool shot, put the bullet in the right place, and stay within the range your cartridge is capable of making a clean kill.
