I love those old ads Casastahle...thanks for posting. I remember speaking with my Grandmother about life and living in times past. She remarked that the one convenience she would not want to live without is...electric lights.

A few years later she gave me this...

I've seen lots of Coleman lamps, stoves and other things, but never ever one of the lamps with the shade. I'd love to have one for when the weather blows out our electricity like it did several years ago.

December 1926, on only 8 months before my mother was born.

Somewhere along the line I went nuts for the Colman 200A line. I like the red color and single-mantle design. I think they put out the most useable light for the amount of fuel they use. The side wall of my garage is covered with 200A's... I have some other odd ones too with nickle-plated tanks and yellow globes and small fuel inlets. I also found one built with a steel "globe" that was intended for use as a heater.

I pick them up pretty regularly at the local flea market for anywhere between $3 - $10 or so. I'll pay a little more for a really nice one - but I typically have to rebuild them and replace all the seals/O-rings and then they work just fine. Like a dummy, I stumbled onto one of the rare red & green Christmas models and thought it was a "parts lantern" and wound up painting the green tank black. Maybe someday I'll restore it properly.

Say what? Tell me your kidding! Stop buying guns. I'll probably never be able to say that.

Love my Coleman lanterns.

Very cool. I passed up an opportunity this weekend at the Dayton Hamvention for a couple of 220's (the dual mantle ones) but talked my self out of it since I already have one of the 220's and three 200's. I posted here about how wonderful the 200's were in another thread.

Shame too, probably could have got cheap. He had them marked at $10 each but I bet he would have come down.

Weekend before last we had a t'storm move through. I sat on the back patio porch, had all three lanterns going (just in case!) and my scaredy-cat Sheltie in my lap and medium size sport utility dog sitting underneath my chair.

Here's my dad's Coleman from 1936. He got it for Boy Scouts, and carried it throughout the South Pacific with him during the war. I found it neglected in storage but with a little elbow grease and a couple new parts I had polished, and lit up again after 35 years of sitting.
