OT - Left Handed Female Shooter
I am in the process of outfitting a left handed woman for hunting !
She's maybe 5'3" and maybe 115 pounds . And left handed as said above . I wish to get her three guns . A ML , a rifle and a slug shotgun .
I have pretty much kicked the Contender/Encore idea to the curb .
For a slug shotgun I'm thinking a Browning BPS 20 gauge with the cantilever scope mount . I'd rather have a Remington 870 but they don't make it in that configuration for a lefty anylonger .
For a rifle I was thinking of a Browning A-Bolt LH in 25 WSSM but they no longer make those and they're kinda hard to find . The Browning BAR Short Trac LH in 308 WIN might be the ticket , but I'm a little concerned about the recoil from that thing for a woman of 115 pounds . Also Remington makes a 700SPS Youth LH in 7mm-08 that would be nice .
As to a ML I've not come to any conclusion other then it will be an inline .
If she were right handed it would be a piece of cake !
I'd get probably a REM 700 SPS Youth in 7mm-08 , a Savage 220 Youth and a Savage 10ML-II and cut the stock down a tad !

I'm a southpaw and never had an issue with the 870. You can find a left hand safety button, but once used to it the normal safety is not an issue either.another shotgun option may be the Mossberg 500 either in regular or youth. I have never been botherd by seeing the empties going left to right. No worse than a model 94 ejecting straight up.

Thanks , but if I get her a BPS it shucks them straight down . No problem for right or left !
Mossberg while economical has never been high on my want list . And I wanna get her things I might concievably get for myself .
I'm okay with a BPS as I had one earlier in 10 gauge . And while I've never owned a BAR Short Trac I have thought they were kinda neat ever since they brought them out !

Re: OT - Left Handed Female Shooter
As a Lefty I shoot a 870/16, have no problem with the piece.
Get Her an 870/20 youth model. My Daughter had one and I reloaded for the piece. Not many Dove or Quail went past Her. We never shot slugs so no experience with that at all.
With that port so close, and with my right hand I can sure load a follow- shot fast, if needed.
I also shoot a Winchester 97/16 for CAS-SASS. I say, JMB made the 97 for lefty's.

Re: OT - Left Handed Female Shooter
You guys are missing the point !
I am not buying her right handed guns !
If I'm gonna lay out the cash I want them to be made for her (left handed) !
Not really worried about anything but deer hence the need for the guns I mentioned .
With the BPS I mentioned I can get a choke barrel later if the need arises or she can shoot one of many O/U's or SxS's at our home .

You might look at the Ithica, they have a different sized receiver foor each gauge so a 20 gauge tube doesn't get put on 12 gauge receiver. They also load and eject from the bottom.

Re: OT - Left Handed Female Shooter
I'd suggest staying away from the Remington stuff that has "SPS" marked on it. The stocks they use are too flimsy in my opinion. I have a SPS Tactical and the rubber stock comes in contact with the barrel if you put to much pressure on the front.

The 20 gauge BPS is also on a smaller frame then the 12 gauge .

I have a strong feeling I'll end up with the BPS walnut stocked , a BAR Short Trac walnut stocked and maybe a CVA Inline with some kind of synthetic thing for the ML !RustyJr wrote:I'd suggest staying away from the Remington stuff that has "SPS" marked on it. Re: OT - Left Handed Female Shooter
If I'm not mistaken CVA still makes a 45 cal ML which would be perfect for her !
Worse comes to worse I'll get another stock for my Knight 45 cal Disc rifle and cut it down for her to use !
Incidently they make the Browning Short Trac LH in 7mm-08 as well . That may be a better choice !
I have an extra already shortened stock for a Ruger #1 . I could fit that stock to her and let her use a Ruger #1B in 243 , 6mm or 257 Roberts .
So if I did the Ruger thing for the rifle and the new stock for the Disc rifle then all I'd need to buy would be the BPS 20 gauge !

Have you looked at the Savage rifles? they make left handed and they just plain shoot.
For a slug gun take a look at the H&R Ultra Slug Hunter its a single shot right or left handed doesn't matter.
You can get the Lyman Great Plains Hunter in left handed with a twist suitable for sabots.

A picture I think would help us form a more educated opinion.

The rifles don't exactly float my boat even though I know them to be very accurate !
I've done the H&R Slug gun 20 gauge already and I don't want one that heavy for her . I found the little 20 gauge Ulktra Slug DeLuxe to be heavy !!!!!
As to the Lyman GPH I wanna get a inline no sidelocks .

I think he was hoping for a picture of the shooter, not the gun

There are plenty of left handed 870s out there in really good shape. I looked at several at Market Hall in Dallas a couple weeks ago. I guess you've looked enough that you know whether or not you can find one with a cantilever scope rail.
You said you discounted the Encore/Contender. . .Have you dismissed single shots in general? if not, what about a Ruger #1 available in various calibers? Or an 1885?

Slender females tend to take well to the .243 WCF. My expeirences, anyway.
Re: OT - Left Handed Female Shooter
Yes a few posts back I mentioned that I already have Ruger #1B's in 243 , 6mm and 257 Roberts as well as an extra shortened stock . So I may use one of those and not need to purchase a rifle .vancelw wrote:

Re: OT - Left Handed Female Shooter
I am a left handed shooter and made do with right handed firearms all of my life. Today there are weapons made for left handed people. The right vs. left is not an issue to me, until you come to the muzzle loader. Be it flint or cap lock, I want the fire, smoke and debris to be on the other side of the stock from my face and eyes.

Re: OT - Left Handed Female Shooter
The 870 never gave me a problem being a lefty but it sure gave the range officers fits trying to orient themselves to show me
But even they on occasion had to admit that some guns designed for right handed use just worked better for lefties like the S&W Model 10.How about the BLR?

Re: OT - Left Handed Female Shooter
Well, I vote for the BPS. A good friend of mine lost his right eye and traded his old Model 12 for a BPS, learned to shoot left handed, and has used it ever since. I borrowed it for a few shots one day, and bought one for myself. The BPS is my favorite pump gun - and I'm right handed. For one thing, it has the safety on the tang where it belongs, not down on the trigger guard. Plus, it has flat sides that are perfect surfaces for engraving, and ladies love a touch of class.
If recoil is a problem, you might look at a gas auto though.

I think she's gonna end up with a 20 gauge BPS Deer Special with the cantilever scope mount for using at the Blackwater NWR !
Also I think she will end up with either my Ruger #1B im 6mm REM or 257 Roberts after I've put my extra shortned stock on the one I think will work better for her !
And it seems CVA makes a nice inline ML in 45 caliber !
So I need to dig down deep for about $1200 !
