Bullets Spinning on Ice

Post by RVM45 »

This is just a bit of Gun--or more precisely--Ammo arcana--But its PHUN TO WATCH.

The Dude can shoot into the Ice, and get the Bullets to turn like Tiny Gyroscopes.

I thought the video of the bullet still spinning away was an interesting illustration of rifling that I could show my kids. If he's in the middle of nowhere I don't think the danger is very high (doesn't seem like a ricochet directly back is much of a concern) but I did give them a "don't try this - bad things could easily ensue" warning.

Am I going to run out and try it? No. Did I enjoy the YouTube clip? Yes.

Kinda gives the lie to those who insist bullet rotation is tied directly to rate of forward motion, or that rotation would have insignificant effects if a torn up bullet traversed soft tissue. Can you say garbage disposal blade?

I've done exactly the same thing with hard-cast 250-gr slugs from a .45 Colt, moving out at nearly 1200 fps, on hard ice...The really amazing part of it is that the bullets suffer almost NO deformation from impact with the ice...

I shot a squirrel on a metal gate and the bullet bounced back and hit me in the stomach. It stung a bit and left a welt. :|

Ok, I guess I ain't too bright here. Saw the video. He shot into the ice at about a 40 - 45 degree angle and the bullet bounced back and landed at his feet (and one behind him) spinning???

From a personal experience, shooting at Ice in a lake is a really bad idea. I once had a 22 Long Rifle
round fired from a Ruger 10/22 come straight back at me with incredible velocity. I think it missed my head by about an inch.

Ha! I got that in an e-mail a couple of hours ago.

I've shot hundreds, maybe thousands of bullets in the ice. In my early days, while ice skating or woods loafing (lake loafing?), it was standard practice to carry a pistol to shoot the ice to test for thickness before walking on it. Yep, no deformation. I've had many a bullet bouce back, with little or no force and we used everything from .22's, 32-20's, 44 spl's and maggies----------Sixgun

That's what surprised me. You'd think it would flatten out into a good mushroom.

The effects are insignificant.
