o/t Ruger or Brownings 22 pistols

I am in the market for a 22 pistol. I have an High Standard double nine and a Ruger single-six, but i will be putting my can on it, which means that I have to use a pistol. Which 22 pistol of those two would you guys choose. The Ruger or the Browning? Pro's and cons? By the way, Jeff from Gunblast article about the Savage MKII with a can put this bug in me. Now it is an illness. Please point out the pro's and cons of both. By the way the folks at Tactical Solutions were very helpful and easy to work with.

Really, 10 to 1, 1/2 doz of another. They are so close in every catagory IMO that it comes down to personal taste. Some think the browning has a better trigger and some think it strips easier. Some think the Ruger is more solid and more reliabale. I've never see any of that. They are that close.

But what may sway you is availability of threaded barrels. I know Ruger is now putting them on MK's but I don't know about Browning. Now if you're looking at aftermarket barrels than the Rugers cost more and require an FFL transfer. I don't "think" the Browning does. Ruger = barrel and receiver, Browning = only barrel. ???

You're getting into a Ford/Chevy debate IMO. I've owned one Buckmark and 2-3 MkIIs. I still own the BM.

For me it came down to take down and reassembly. I picked up the BM first and none of the MKIIs were any more accurate but all were much more of a beating to take down and reassemble when it came time to clean. Purely a personal preference.

The BM has an advantage IMO in that the barrels are easier to change around of you want one for plinking or target shooting and a dedicated barrel for the can. AFAIK the MkII barrel is pressed/pinned in place and requires a while new top end if you want to swap barrels around. The top end is the serial numbered part so that means involving an FFL.

Another plus for me is the BM uses the same mags as my Buckmark carbine. It cuts the clutter on my workbench down a tad...

Both are very reliable and accurate, but.....

Ruger - PITA to take down for a cleaning. Voluartsen makes trigger parts, so it can have a match grade trigger.

Browning - You can shoot longer between cleanings because the breech is open on both sides...clogs less.

Ruger is going to be selling a MKIII threaded for such things. I think that answers the question.

I can't speak for the Browning, but I have had a Mk II with a bull barrel
for years. I've now got a Volquartsen accurizing kit in it and their target
grips on it. Excellent trigger, and the grips are a huge improvement over
stock. I had some Hougue wraparound grips on it before, and these
were also great. Better for field work, but not as good as the Volquartsen
for target work. The pistol is more accurate and consistent than I'll ever
be - and that's with cheap Federal 36 gr. HP ammo.

Takedown for cleaning can be a PITA - ya get used to it........

Neither is a bad choice. I started with a Mk II, had a couple, and then bought a Buck Mark. I've sold all my Mk II's and have several BMs. That should tell you what I think......

IMHO the BM had a better trigger out of the box, and can be made even better by flipping over a spring - google 'heggis flip' if you'd like to see the details. It's a 10-minute job if you take your time.

I also like that you can more cheaply switch barrels on the BM, and you don't have to go through a FFL.

Everyone I know with a Browning say that they are more finicky with ammo. My buddy gave me his for awhile because he was fed up withit. I took it apart and cleaned it. I tried 6 different types of ammo till I found one that didn't jam. He has stuck with that brand of ammo and it has been fine. Don't remember what brand it was. I know people with 30K rounds through their Mark II 's and they still shoot great. I'm looking at buying a Ruger this spring.

I prefer the Browning. Mine runs about any ammo I've tried in it. Years ago this was my small bore plate match gun. For accuracy it likes Eley 10X but shoots as good with the cheap PMC Zapper but with an occassional flier.

Another option is the new GSG 1911-22. They sell one with a threaded barrel as well.

I've been thinking about getting a "Tactical Solutions" barrel for my Buckmark. Plan on doing the same thing with adding a can as soon as I get the paperwork approved.

I have a MKII that is threaded for a can and I like it but I have never used a BM with a can so I can't be a real help except to say taking the MKII down isn't that big a deal. Tom

The easiest pistol to put a can on,coupled with price,dependability and getting one that is accurate and not finicky about ammo is the Walther P22 with the 6" barrel.I have shot one belonging to a friend and it is great.

I have both. My Ruger MkIII shot a cloverleaf at 25 yards with its first 3 shots......Its a keeper. It is the blue steel 5.5" bull barrel model. My Browning Buckmarks first 3 shots went into 1.5 inchs at 50 yards from seated. The ammo I was shooting in both guns is CCI mini mags. My Buckmark has a Leupold Gilmore red dot sight on it. I mounted a little piece of rail underneath the barrel and installed a M3 light under the barrel. I wouldnt be able to decide between the 2 guns.......Besides, as JT always says, BUY BOTH! Both are easily adopted to use a can......

As matter of fact, we were testing a lightweight 9mm can on a 22 pistol just yesterday. It wasnt quite as quiet as the 22 can on a 22 pistol but still very effective. I plan to suppress one of my 9mm pistols and just switch that can to my 22 as needed.
