Rear Iron Sight with Good Elevation Adjustment? Dovetail typ

Hey all,

I'm looking for another rear iron sight for my Rossi 92.

I need one with better elevation control other than those metal "stairstep" kind that slide under the buckhorn type sights.

In short I have a bead front sight that can't be adjusted for elevation and a bullseye ghost ring front sight that is already on its lowest setting (removed that metal stairstep elevation control alltogether)...well I'm shooting a bit high and would like to fine tune that.

Are there any rear sights with more control on elevation that would fit by dovetail?
....anything out there you could recommend?

First I have no experience with those bulls eye rear sights, but if you have removed the elevator the sight is about as low as your going to get. Most rear sights will be pretty close to the same distance from the barrel with the elevator removed.

You don't need a rear sight with more elevation adjustment, you need a taller front sight.

Put the elevator back in and set it ON the bottom step. Then shoot a group at a known distance, say 25 or 50 yards. Then use the formula on the Brownells site to determine how much taller a front sight you need.
Then order that one and install it.

FWIW, the front sight CAN be adjusted for elevation.

Since the rifle's shooting too high with the rear sight all the way DOWN, you need to switch the front sight out for a taller one. (They just push right out.)

Measure the issue front sight blade from the top, down to the bottom of it's male dovetail, and buy a replacement sight blade, with the bead material/size of your choice (Ivory/Gold/Fiber-optic/etc) that's at least 1/10" (.100") higher than the issue sight measurement.

BTW - The 1/10" is only a generality - it's best to shoot at 100yds with the rear sight in the MIDDLE of it's elevation adjustment range, and measure (in inches) how high it's shooting from the POA at that distance.
Then, a sight height calculator may be used to find out exactly the height of the replacement sight needed.

I ordered mine from Steve Gunz but it doesn't say what size the dovetail is or how tall the sights are.

I have an EMF Rossi and a newer, Braztech 357. The front sights on both have been changed out, using a standard Marbles front sight purchased from Buffalo Arms. Both of my 92s took the standard, 3/8 dovetail found on many guns that were made in the US. By the way, the formula mentioned earlier can be found on line--don't know about on Brownell's website, but I found it on the Marbles website.

Well just measured the front sight I have and the darn thing is already .5" high. That's one of the largest sizes that I have found...grrrr can't find any much bigger than that.

Maybe I will have to start looking back at changing out the rear sight again and/or just changing out both sights and get it over with.

Well, one other option would be a front sight RAMP. If you're after function and not looks, that might be what you need. You can even get easy-to-replace front sight inserts for some ramps that just snap in and out (like on the Ruger Redhawk, for instance). A gunsmith could sweat-solder it on, drill & tap for it, or perhaps you could even use a tapped 'dovetail insert' like the ones used to attach some of the 'scout' rails using the rear sight dovetail.

Now that is a COOL sight. "Vintage", yet very practical looking...!

I presume one could use the large 'disk' aperture for range/target use, and remove it for a low-profile 'ghost ring' effect, just like with other aperture sights...

(sigh), Charles - like that redheaded gal told you, all those many year ago: You not doing it ringt.

Your rifle obviously has a front sight that's mounted directly in a barrel dovetail. THAT means, you shouldn't be looking at the normal front sight blades, which have a narrower base in order to be the same width as the front sight ramps most mount into.

You need to be looking at front sights that have a WIDE (.370" IIRC) base, made for direct barrel mounting, so the base fills the barrel dovetail entirely.

Williams Gun Sight Co (for one) makes one such that's .570" high - which should be more than enough to compensate for your sighting error - available not only directly, but from vendors like MidwayUSA & Brownells.

I went a different direction. Because of poor eyesight I put a Doug Turnbull rear sight mount for a Burris Fastfire II red dot sight (for the 94 Winchester). Very fast to use and spot on.

If you have the two holes on the left side of your receiver you can too. If your receiver is not already tapped, any gunsmith can do the job for you.
