Local guy is selling a pretty nice Navy Arms Model 1892 SRC in .44-40. Round barrel with color-case hardened receiver (or at least made to look like CCH). Excellent condition. He wants $425 for the gun and a box of ammo.
Who made these for Navy Arms? How is the quality? Durability? I shouldn't be considering it, but it would look dandy next to my .44-40 Schofield.

Some of those 92's were rough as a cob. My Rossi 92 44-40 was a rough one to start. It took a lot of work. Now it is a real shooter.
If it is stock and not touched, its kinda the luck of the draw.
$425.00 is a little much for a used one. $350.00 is the going price in these parts.

Did Rossi make the Navy Arms guns?

Grab it! Yes Rossi, but like Pre 2006 EMFs, the Navy Arms 92s sported better sights--at least the carbines IIRC--and were the only Rossis with real walnut furniture. In the same year/2006 EMF (and maybe a very few last Navy Arms??) "had" to add the stupid safety worn just by LSI Pumas to that point, Navy Arms quit its import of Rossi 92s (1892s).
In any case, yours very likely is a pre-safety. Good price if in good shape.
Rossi 92s are generally great guns. If not completely to your smoothness expectations, usually a bit of "dry levering" and/or shooting will help or, failing that, well worth a trip to Steve Young (Nate Kiowa Jones) or get his instructional DVD and steel mag follower, one of the few parts (replacement) fixes "needed" over time.
Not too many Navy Arms around, especially the round barrels. Most out there are the heavier octagonal short and long rifles.
