You must be at least 18 years of age to purchase a long gun and least 21 years of age and be a resident of Indian to buy a handgun; have a valid photo ID and submit to and pass an in-store, instant FBI criminal background check (N.I.C.S. ).
No waiting period on long guns or handguns.

Long guns - background check is typically 'instant' and anyone over 18 can buy.

Hand guns - background check is typically 'instant' and anyone over 21 can buy.

Waiting period I believe is ONLY for handguns, and is waived if you are a CCW licensee.

Indiana has 4,800,000 citizens who are over 18 years of age, and about 390,000 have a CCW permit, so she should join the 1-in-12 adults in Indiana who are CCW licensees.   If she's not got a criminal record, she should get one easily (takes 90 days typically for first-time issue). Can get lifetime permit for $75 I think.

If you want to let me know what general part of the state she lives in, I can tell you/her if three are any nearby dealers who are 'decent'. The only one I would absolutely NEVER buy a gun from is the anti-gun "Don's Guns" in Indianapolis - he's always on television arguing for bans on assault weapons, registration, etc., despite what he sells for a living...

OS,
Here's some FAQs from the IN State Police:

Hope it helps some.

Indiana issues a LTCH ( License to Carry a Handgun). This allows concealed carry or open carry.

Sent Cris the link to this topic. She says it was very helpful and wanted me to convey her thanks to you fellows. Here is a lady who is recently interested in shooting and had an opportunity to shoot a number of different types lately.

He's still kicking around? He used to be the only indoor range in my area, so I went into the shop frequently back in the mid-80's. Turd liked to hit on my Mom when she went with me. He used to be on TV with semi-auto "assault rifles" in both hands hawking them. What a putz!

Sorry to hi-jack your post OS!!!

She may find a welcome forum in the Indiana Gun Owners, and they have a forum section for women, which she might find less intimidating than some of the macho-blowhard-guy type stuff on regular 'gun' forums (except our gentlemanly Levergunscommunity  ). That forum is at - http://ingunowners.com/forums/women_and_firearms/.

If she's in the Indianapolis area, Beech Grove Firearms is a friendly and decent place, and if in the south-central part of the state I know a VERY gentlemanly and decent cop who will duly walk her through any permitting process, help her select and obtain a firearm, and tell her who's-who in the local area as far as decent gun shops and so on. I can PM you the information to get hold of him, and you can relay it to her, if she prefers. Just let me know.

...
Oh yeah, if her cholesterol is not right, or she has an earache, infected toenails, or any arthritis or anything, give her my card...

Thanks AJ - she is up near Warsaw and has connections. We are old friends from college and she just happened across this interest with a friend up there and we have talked a lot about it. Appreciate your input and consideration.
