Update on Mossberg 464

Post by Captain Hero »

ive got just over 250 rounds through mine and have not had any issues with it yet. she feeds and extracts just fine and i noticed the action is starting to free up some, but not much. my accuracy at 75 yrds. is 3.5" +/- with iron sights shooting from a makeshift rest. i cant shoot 100 yards down into the holler cuz its not cleared out yet. i imagine it will get better when i get a scope on it. mine seems to like the fusion 150 gr. and the hornady 160 ftx respectivley. the blueing could have been a bit deeper but like i said its going to be a deer and hog gun. not a safe queen.

the fit and finish on mine is pretty darn good. no uneven breaks between the metal and wood like some ive seen. all the small gaps are uniform all the way around the rifle. the blueing could have been a bit deeper but like i said its going to be a deer and hog gun. not a safe queen. mine is the straight grip and the wood isnt all that pretty but i dont intend on using the gun for show. so i dont care. i took one deer with it so far and plan to do some hog hunting with it.

the rifle utilizes weaver 403 bases for front and rear and they both will overhang the reciever. iron sights are still able to be used with higher rings.

as far as operation, ive not had any issues. not one flaw. it may not be the prettiest one to look at but i can see it being a good workhorse.

my local shop has one of the "stainless" models in and i noticed the fit and finish on the furniture wasnt all that great. at least not as uniform as the one i have now. may be due to the rifle still being a newer release? dont know. but i have no regrets on mine.

Cpt Hero,

I wish we were closer, I'd love to help you test the accuracy of that Mossberg. I've got a benchmark load that every other 30-30 I've tried it from has worked very well.

Is yours one of the later ones with the Walnut stocks or the other wood?

Joe, if it's a straight grip I don't think it's walnut. I could be mistaken, but I think the premium pistol grip model is the one that comes with walnut.

CH, here is a link to another type of bases for the 464:

Thanks for the report!!

Oly,

OK on that. I've only seen one of those and it had the non Walnut wood. It was the straight stock as well.

i beleive the wood on it is berch. nothing too fancy. i dont think its walnut. the pistol grip models are walnut. and the one i have is a newer made rifle, but straight grip.

i wish you were closer too joe. id love to try out some handloads in this thing. plus you prolly could have fixed my ranger. lol. i plan on putting a leupold vx-II on it in the next month or so. that oughtta be interesting.

thanks for the info on the other bases as well oly.

i hope this little update helps out a bit on some questions others may have.

If you already have the scope I understand but if you were thinking of buying give the Redfields a looksee. Near as I can tell they're something like VX-IIs for sometimes less money (they're made by Leupold) so it's worth a look. The 2-7 would just really kick butt on a lever gun. :)

Cheers,

Another scope to look ar is the Vortex Diamondback. I bought one for my varmint rifle and I am quite impressed so far for clarity and adjustment. No questions asked life time warranty too.
