Ouchie... bullets make holes in meat... Wk 11 Update
A reminder...
I can be an idiot.
Hangfires happen.
Never cover the muzzle with a body part.
.22s hurt, even a perfect through & through "icepick" shot in the meat of the hand.

Did you get it checked out? Be sure all the tendons work properly. Gripping and retracting on each finger.

Lesson to all of us. Sorry you're the instructor though! At least it was a .22 and not a .45 like a fellow did at my local public range a while back.

Stick a ring or some other object through the hole, maybe you can start a new fashion trend... As long as all your digits work, it can not be any worse than some of the stuff this younger generation sticks through their noses and other body parts.

Re: Ouchie... A painful Reminder
It really doesn't hurt much... about like hitting it with a hammer.
Cleaned it up good, got some Peroxide on/in it and bandaged it up.
Might go for a tetanus booster on Monday, but I don't need the hassle of an inquest that going to the ER would create (or the $$$$$ charge either...)
FWIW:
Was using the .22 upper and CCI solids for warmup. The CCIs can be somewhat flaky, so I was doing clearing drills when they gave a FTF. Somehow got the ham of my hand over the muzzle when clearing and a hangfire went off.
Really stupid all in all.

Re: Ouchie... A painful Reminder
If you don't want to risk losing your HAND, you'd better get treated ASAP. Waiting even overnight might be too long. Wound channels in the hand (or foot) can violate tendon sheaths, even without severing the tendons (so everything 'works' ok), and once infection gets in there, you're talking surgeries and 'filleting' and antibiotics via IV and irrigation, all in efforts to salvage the body part. Seriously. Secondary swelling can cut off circulation and mess up nerve function, as well.Old Ironsights wrote:I will, just not today. If you absolutely don't want the "E.R." thing, call your doctor's office NOW and see who is on call and see if they'll get you at a minimum started on antibiotic this evening. If you have any antibiotics on hand or can bum some off someone, tell the doc what you've got access to and maybe they'll just have you use that; around here most of the doctors use Keflex or Augmentin for hand wounds, but I've seen Cipro and Zithromax and darned near everything used, depending on what the patient was allergic to, etc.
I had a patient with just a cylinder-gas cut on the palm of his hand, and due to waiting 12 hours to get it attended to, wound up hand cut open, drains inserted, and weeks of rehabilitation and physical therapy.
His wound looked far more innocent than yours.

Ow, Ow, Ow!!!!
Man, that hurts lookin' at it.
Watch for signs of infection is all I'd do if everything is
working correctly.
Hell, I'd rather die quietly of lockjaw than go to the ER and
get the cops and insurance companies involved. (There ARE
worse things than dying in agony from some hideous infection
ya know..... )
Not a good idea to do it again, either.
Heal fast and well.

We all experience events that serve to remind us of the right way to a thing or that we've done it the wrong way.
Sorry yours is painful.
You're the best judge, but if that gets inflammed or starts to fill with pus, please see a medical professional, because we don't need the lesson that comes next.
On the other hand, if all turns out well by avoiding such, please share your course of self-treatment.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

7 hours, and 2 cleanings later:
CCI .22 "High Velocity" solids are sooty. After cleaning up there isn't much black left. A little bruising, some powder burns around the point of entry, but nothing major.
Actually covering the two holes with a pair of regular band-aids & neosporin now.
That and some precautionary antibiotics and local Doc says... BWAHAHAHAH!

This is a good reminder to all of us. We get so used to a percieved misfire NOT going off we can get sloppy with waiting for the prescribed cookoff period. There's always that one time that reaches out and bites you for sure. Again, just as glad as can be that your alright Bryan.

Re: Ouchie... A painful Reminder
Day 2. Alles klah.
Swelling minimal, pain about like day 2 of a hammer-hit thumb. No redness or tenderness.
Here's the angle of penetration.
If the muzzle had been closer to the edge of the hand the meat probably would have torn. If the angle of incident had been a little deeper, I'd have clipped a tendon or bone.
All in all, if one has to take a bullet, this was about the best way possible.

Re: Ouchie... A painful Reminder - bullets make holes in meat...
Glad to hear you're okay. A lesson for all. Obviously could of been much worse.
During last years reserve academy we had a recruit fumble his 1911 and took a FMJ right across the front of his stomach. Opened him up pretty good. Like you undid the zipper. Talk about lucky.

So sorry for the mishap, OS. Praise God that you didn't lose the use of your finger(s) or get blood poisoning!
Here's the good side - if you hold your hand just right, now you can pass your DMV eye tests more easily!

There are only two catergories of shooters......those who have had a accidnetal discharge and those who will.
I never fixed or covered the spot on the wall of my reloading room where the 230 grain JHP 45 ACP hit when I dropped the slide with a broken firing pin. Reminds me everyday that being perfectly safe is a lie we tell ourselves.
Thanks for sharing this worthwhile reminder. I hope you heal quickly and completely.

How true. I put a 230gr ball into the dirt right in front of me while trying to de-cock my issue 1911 after being relieved at a road block. Hot sweaty jungle, gun all lubbed up to prevent rust, me 18 years old (insert "stupid" if you'd like) - about the only thing that went right was my training so I had it pointed in a safe direction like I've always try to do since. Scared the snot outta me and those standing around me, I'll tell you that for sure!wm wrote:There are only two catergories of shooters......those who have had a accidnetal discharge and those who will.

About a week later my machine gunner (I was the a-gunner) shot his best friend stone dead while playing with his 1911. Such a waste...
Thanks for the lesson-learned! It's always good to read of these things and think about it some.
