Two maybe stupid questions

Post by J Miller »

First; what is the formula to determine ft pds of muzzle energy? I've seen it before, but can't find it right now.

Second; is there a simple "how to" book, (with pics) on how to skin and gut game animals? I'm not a hunter, just a long time shooter, so my education for that is lacking.

http://www.airhog.com/convert.htm
Bullet weight X Muzzle velocity squared / 450411
I've also seen: 1/2 muzzle velocity squared = muzzle energy.

I haven't used these in mebbe 30 years, 'cause I just don't have any use for that info.

mikld,
Thanks for the formula. When you square something you multiply it by itself ... correct?
The reason I wanted that formula is because IL requires 500 ft pds of muzzle energy for handguns to be legal for deer. I've got a load I'm pretty sure is legal, but I want to make sure.

Well, using the Airhog: Muzzle Energy Calculations site I just found out both my favorite loads are IL legal from my 7.5" Ruger BH, but only one from the 4.75" Uberti Cattleman.
Cool!

The 'game processing' videos are far better than books. Many on-line videos are good, as well.

I have a great .pdf document called "Boning out your deer" by Oregon State University. It includes detailed instructions and pictures. Send me a PM with your email and I'll get it off to you (5 MB file).

AJ,
Problem with that is it takes nearly an hour to down load a 3 minute youtube video. That is .... if the modem stays connected.

Joe, Sam Fadala wrote a book on game care and processing. "The complete Guide to Game care and Cookery"

Abe books has them starting at $1.00 with 2.62 shipping.

Joe, do a Google on "dressing and butchering game" and you will find plenty to get you started.
Here is one I found which gives a general overview, http://www.tn.gov/twra/pdfs/gamehandling.pdf

Yeah - forgot about that.

The local library might have stuff, too. If nothing else, does them good to get a person in now and then requesting 'gun' or 'hunting' stuff - keeps 'em edjucated about those of us who aren't citified.
