Gunbroker Purchase Sent Back

Post by Ben_Rumson »

Bought a Savage 99 A series 250 3000 off of GunBroker... But.. Upon visual inspection I could see the barrel is ringed about an inch behind the front sight...A tight patch confirmed the worst.. Also the cocking indicator is missing... None of these defects were mentioned in the item description...Seller said he had someone check out several firearms he purchased as a lot, this rifle among them, and he was told it was OK along with others... OK fair enough bad luck on me...I sent it back...The auction rules say 3 day inspection and I pay return shipping if I send it back...But I’m kinda ruffled because aside from the full purchase price refund, I got only $10 bucks back.... Am I wrong in thinking that the seller should have refunded the total amount I spent on return shipping in light of the unadvertised defects I found? Or count myself lucky that he didn't interpret the rules more strictly and keep the $10 bucks he kicked me? Also the refund check is a personal check, and from a bank I've never heard of.
Also the rifle is now currently re listed with the bulge described but nothing is mentioned about the missing cocking indicator.....I say this so that any of you that may be bidding, or considering it will know so you can back out ( if you want to ) before the reserve gets met.....

I sell on Auction Arms. I have almost 300 all positive feedbacks because i guard them. I've even refunded for guns sold "AS-IS".
If that had been one of my guns and I had missed such a serious defect I would have fully refunded the original amount with S&H and sent him a shipping label on my account to get it back.

I would add, I buy from both sights, but I don't bid on anything if the seller has more than 1 or 2% negative feedback and even then only if his rebuttals are apologetic.

My first and only GunBroker adventure (NEVER AGAIN!) I got a total piece of junk that was described as "excellent condition". Sent it back the same day, seller told me via email he would refund my money as soon as he received it. Took me only about 3 months to get it back and did NOT get any postage at all back, just felt lucky to get back the purchase price. Jerk had over 1700 postive feedbacks. :(

IMO, you read the terms and by bidding agreed to them. Yes, fault is his, but IMO he did a good thing by refunding the ten dollars which by the terms he wasn't obligated to do. He indicated that someone else had checked out the rifle, so you can't lay blame entirely on him...unless he was aware of the bulge and knowingly misrepresented it. But his relisting it with the bulge indicates that he is trying to be heads up about the rifle. As for the indicator...it was probably over his head as to what you were trying to describe. I'd give the benefit of the doubt there, and assume it was good. Also the time frame as to the refund says a lot.

FWIW, I've yet to be burned on GB. I'm sure my day is coming, but so far I've bought several and all were as advertised with most being better.

Sir,
It happens on both ends. Iv'e bought and sold about 20 times on GB with only 1 bidder refusing to pay. He bid 12 times to get to the reserve on a rifle I had listed as used, but, As New. He asked if it was fired. After the sale. Of course I had to tell him I didn,t know . He refused to pay. He is now banned from buying or selling on GB.

I have never had a bad deal on GB, knock on wood. If I were in your shoes, I think I'd be happy with getting my purchase price and the 10 bucks back. Well, maybe not happy, but you know what I mean.

I've had good luck on Gunbroker (knock on wood).

An honest man would have refunded every dime you spent.

Publish that man's name and never do business with him again.

There are rules to follow for BOTH buyers and sellers. I think he did you good in refunding the $10. As some here know, I refund the whole thing, but that's me. I'm glad you got your money back right away. That often doesn't happen. People who sell guns to raise money often have already spent the money when return happens (even within the stated 3 days) and have to save up to "buy back" their gun.

It is unfortunate that some Gunbroker sellers are just as ignorant as some of the clerks and customers in gun stores (or more so). They wouldn't be able to notice the cocking indicator was gone nor that the barrel was ringed. They couldn't take a good photo if they tried and they don't. As a buyer I assume that the condition is 20% worse than described unless the photos show otherwise. I've never been disappointed but I have gotten guns in worse condition than described.
Sincerely,

Hobie

The seller took care of you. It sounds like he made the effort, to be honest.

I have never been burned, on either site. I always ask the "obvious" and ask for "confirmation", of what I cannot see.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

I've refunded based on the buyer attitude. I've refunded everything without being asked when I realized the error was my fault. I recently had a buyer contact me about something he wasn't happy with. His very first email started out "your pictures were intentionally misleading" "you will refund 100%", "I demand this", "I demand that", etc. He didn't get any shipping back. If he would have just contacted me with a little tact, I'd have given him his shipping back as well.

I once had a guy asking for a refund on a gun I sold him.I asked him what was wrong with it and got some vague answers and I was on the verge of refunding his money when I noticed on another site he was bragging about taking the gun I sold him and basically shooting the hell out of it all weekend having fun and then getting his money back to go try out another gun from an unsuspecting seller.Needless to say he didn t get his refund.

Gunbroker does not require any inspection period.
The inspection period (if any) is set by the seller.

Here's are some newby type questions: Does a ring in the bore necessarily mean that the rifle is no good, or that it won't shoot worth a darn? I bought a model 1893 Marlin levergun in 32-40 caliber and notice a ring inside the bore, about 5 or 6 inches back from the muzzle. It was a pawn-shop purchase, so I am sure there are no return privelidges. The price was reasonable. Could this gun actually shoot decently if I tailor my loads (e.g. cast bullets or jacketed bullets only)? Does the ring appear even if the bulge is very minor? What usually causes the bulge/ring in the first place?
