Are these 1886's available

Post by foxtrapper »

If so where is the best place to buy one from? How's the quality? I see that they don't have the "lawyer parts" :D http://chiappafirearms.com/product/826

Foxtrapper, I can't attest to the quality of past and present Chiappa firearms, but it seems it was a stuff shoot on whether you got a good one or a bad one. Personally, I'd get a Browning even though they're as a rule of thumb more expensive.

Hit or miss and the service is very poor. Run, do not walk away.
Kind regards,

Just asking if you guys are confusing Chiappa with Chaparral? Chaparral definitely has a bad rep.

Maybe Steve Young (aka Nate Kiowa Jones) can chime in here. He was asked by Chiappa to get involved--re his opinion/expertise--from the get-go (or at least mid-stream?) to insure the '86s were spot on. NKJ had noted some teething/small parts issues (or other aspects causing consternation) he saw with some early Chiappa/Armi Sport (via Cimarron, Taylors and LSI) 92s. Don't know if they've addressed some of those to his satisfaction, but they are all very nicely finished pieces.

Slightly OT, but in perusing Cjiappa's site, they list an 1892 Trapper as "44WRM" caliber. 44 Mag or 44-40 or what? 44Winchester Rimfire Magnum?

Boy, what a mess them .45's make.

Yes, that seems to be the case. It's kind of funny how that all played out. The Chiappa folks told me they changed their Armi Sport name to Chiappa/Armi Sport to separate themselfs from the other company, Armi San Marco. Then, Armi San Marco eventually changed their name to Chaparral. :?

As for availability of the Chiappa 86, it's my understanding they are still making changes.

Like Uberti, I've found the Chiappa home site isn't the best/most accurate to tell what exact combinations or configurations we get on this side of the pond. Better to look at Cimarron (http://www.cimarron-firearms.com), Taylor's (http://www.taylorsfirearms.com and LSI (http://www.legacysports.com) - the top importers of the Chiappa/Armi Sport products....and not all of these offer all the models/configurations either IIRC. Case in point, last I checked, Taylors still didn't offer the 92 in .44 Mag.

My guess on the "WRM" mentioned is probably a typo meaning instead RM for Remington Magnum...again, just a guess.

Fox,
This one's coming direct from Legacy Sports to play with. Dunno what the actual retail is, my dealer's just a facilitator on these things, he handles incoming for me.
Loaner only, I was just commenting on it because when I get a new model sample it usually means general availability is not far behind.

I'll be happy to mention how it looks when I pick it & the Rossi Ranch Hand up tomorrow. :)
The one I saw at the SHOT Show at their booth in January was quite nice.

Quality is pretty good.
Inletting in wood to metal areas is well done, action's tight, little stiff, lever's tight.
Small gap between front end of fore-end & cap that shouldn't really be there, mag tube has some slight play in its forward mount to the barrel.
Case colors not bad, mostly a nice oil-finished straight grained walnut.

Nice looking rifle.

Denis, any word on if the screw threads/parts are interchangeable with originals ? (I know the Rossi 92's use vastly different screws.)

Dennis thanks for the report :D I really want a 1886 26" octagon barrel. I had a 26" Marlin cowboy but cut it down to 18" for ease of use in a treestand . It was my go to Canadian black bear rifle untill I had a 50AK built on a Marlin. I know you said your buddy does not do retail ,still do you or hehave a ballpark figure of what these rifles will go for?

Cap,
Dunno what may be interchangeable with originals, it's a good question & I'll see what I can find out.
Other Chiappa "retro" guns are built to "inch" rather than metric patterns, so there's a possibility. I do know they made some changes on their '87 lever-action shotgun, though.

Fox,
This is a 26-inch octagon, so you should be happy with it.
My buddy does run a retail section in conjunction with his gunsmithing business, but I have no idea what he would charge if he was selling a new one. Didn't ask, I don't intend on keeping it. :)
Probably drop off at the very least a hundred from whatever Legacy's site shows.
