OT- SIN? Levergunner's Hunt Without a Levergun?

Post by GANJIRO »

I returned to see under the sun that the swift do not have the race, nor the mighty ones the battle, nor do the wise also have the food, nor do the understanding ones also have the riches, nor do even those having knowledge have the favor; because time and unforeseen occurrence befall them all.
Ecclesiastes 9:11

I want to prepare for the worse case scenario, I just finished up reloading several rounds of 30/30 using a cast 170 grain gas-check bullet and 4064, Re-7, and 748 powders. I was planning on bringing my Marlin 36D 30/30 and my 357 mag single shot "Shorty". I'm taking a day off from work on Wednesday to sight in several rifles including these two, and my 45/70 SMLE "Smelly Nelly". Worse case scenario my 30/30 has a broken firing pin, no time to fix, in YOUR OPINION would in be a SIN to bring "Smelly Nelly" & "Shorty" to the Texas Leverguns Safari when neither are leverguns? Would it warrant ejection from this fine group?

No, it wouldn't. All of us would like to see your experience with the 45-70. You are a levergunner and you have been awarded the hunt. It is up to you to make your choices for success.

Ganjiro, I would love you to take an animal with "Smelly Nelly" on my part. But I'm a big fan of antique guns at this point.

IMO, yes. But, note that I didn't use capital letters; for it would be a very small one. It would be much worse proposition to miss out on this opportunity for such a trivial matter!

Just go shoot something! Doesn't matter what you use. I personally would love to see how Shorty and Nelly perform.

Well, I'm not thinking that a broken anything is likely, but if it were me I'd take the .45-70. I'd also have one heck of a good time.

Ji, NO WAY DUDE, It can't happen, If you don't bring a lever you have to walk from the Airport to the ranch and wear a hood over your head while at the ranch !!!!!!!!!!!! Just kidding, bring what you have and have a blast. There will also be spare guns at the hunt if anyone needs one. I can bring a Win 94 but it's not in 30-30, everyone knows that a 30-30 can' t kill anything bigger than ground hogs. But my 32 WS, now thats a different story.  The hunt is getting close and I looking forward to meeting you Ji and everyone else that will be there.

Just to simplify this, TEXAS LEVERGUN SAFARI refers to this fine group, not the actual firearms. The hunts that I set up with LEVERGUN listed are reserved for folks that find out about it through the forum. So this hunt is actually for LEVERGUNS people, not necessarily leverguns (firearms).

Ji,

Use whatever you want. It's not about the gun. All we care about is that you have FUN!

Anyone who hunts with a rifle called "Smelly Nelly" is alright in my book no matter what type of action it is..!

Something tells me that even if you don't bring a levergun, you'll end up shooting one on the hunt!

Gi,

If you need a levergun for the hunt, I have a couple I could send down for you to use. Have a Marlin 44 Mag with XS sights and a Marlin 357 with standard sights. Both are pre-safety. Would just need a trustworthy local address to send it to and someone to send it back to me.

You'd be on your own as far sighting them in, but I can tell you the ammo I've got them sighted in to use. I don't know if you'd have the trigger time to get used to someone else's gun, but the offer stands.

FWIW, I wouldn't be at all ashamed to hunt with your 45/70 or your single shot. Both use the principles of leverage throughout their mechanisms, after all. :D

Ji, is Smelly Nelly a short magazine Lee-Enfield re-chambered to .45-70? I saw one at the range a couple of years ago. I'd say, as long as it's a levergun cartridge, it's OK!!! jd45

Ji, the fact that you thought enough to even mention this says that it would be OK what ever you hunt with. Just enjoy the fellowship with good folks.

Thank you brothers, friends, gentlemen for your input. I forgot I still have a Mossberg 472 30/30 with a scope though it is sensitive to cartridge OAL for feeding so not real confident as to it's reliability. I also have my 94AE Trapper too but just a tad paranoid of airline getting it lost along with my 1894 Marlin but I may take a gamble. Would I be overgunned with a 45/70 vs game available? I'm just dying to try out "Shorty" and "Smelly Nelly" but may get my fix at the range, so bring something else.
