25-35 Loading Data

Post by bcmoffitt »

Friends: New member here, Bruce Moffitt of Sandia Park, New Mexico. I have my grandfather's old Model 94 Saddle Carbine in 25-35. Does any one out there have some good moderate loads for a 25-35 with a 100 gr. bullet? Preferably using 3031 or 2400, which I have on hand. The rifle has been used a lot, no blue left to speak of, but is still tight and quite accurate with decent ammo. Great little shooter, and I have eaten a lot of venison with its help. Scored an elk permit this year for the first time in a long time. Think I will use the '06 there though. Wish me luck. Cheers, Bruce Moffitt

I've used the 117gr Hornady with 24grs of 3031 for nearly 40 years now. My books list 26.5 as max, but my own particular rifle (1939) can't come close to handling it.

The last few years I've also been shooting a lot of cast. 110gr FN and 22grs of 3031.

Both loads will keep 5 shots around 2" at 100 yards.

Sounds like I have the twin of your rifle. Bore looks like the inside of someones tailpipe, but still shoots quite well. For fun, try the Hornady 60 grain flatnose, load it up with 4895, terror of the prairie dog town!

I have a 25-36 Marlin which is a twin to the 25-35 only slightly longer.
The load that works best for me is 20 grains of IMR3031 with the 117
grain bullet. Good accuracy.

20 grains of IMR 4198--117 Hornady rn--1980 fps out of a 20" carbine. Winchester factory ammo chronos 2143 fps. 24 gr. IMR 3031 chronos the same as factory ammo but extreme spreads are 100 fps where the 4198 powder gives only 45 fps extreme spreads.

The 4198 load is easy on the gun and the brass lasts forever. :D ----------Sixgun
