OT Friends old Massey tractor won't start, need help.

Post by piller »

Help, a friends old Massey, not a Massey Ferguson, this is older than whey the companies combined, will not start. He had the starter repaired, now it is not getting any spark to the plugs. Can anyone help? I will give more details as I get them.

Pull center lead on coil, stick it back so there's just a gap between lead and coil, crank engine... if you have spark there (be prepared for small bite) :P , check distributor cap for cracks, broken rotor, or point gap. If no spark at coil, check leads to coil.

Oh yea, take cap off distributor and make sure the rotor rotates as engine is cranked.

Is it a Massey like this Massey Harris 33?

If so, you need to check to see if it has juice to the coil and from there juice to the points. Then check the coil lead, distributor cap and so on as explained above.

Also, make sure points open while cranking...... You'd have to check book to get proper point gap, but .015 or so should be adequate..
If no power to hot side of coil, check wiring or switch....
Keep us posted.... These old rigs are fun...

Some old tractors had magneto ignition, not battery-coil-distributor.

A good place to check:
