Poor man's finish remover

Post by ride57 »

greetings, thought I'd share my homemade soda blaster. I can't take credit, I found it on a hot rod forum. I cut a slit in the clear plastic hose (hardware store, couple bucks) a few inches from one end. The slit is just large enough to fit the nozzle in. Its about 3ft long. The other end I cut on a taper. I taped a screwdriver to the hose to make it easy to move around the box of baking soda. I got a small box from the grocery store. I did the slide on a 1911. I havent done the frame yet so I hope you can see the difference. I had the spray can baked on finish from Brownells that had alot of scratches in it. Havent decided what Im going to refinish it with yet.

ETA: WEAR A RESPIRATOR OF SOME SORT! cleanup is wash it away. non toxic etc

Excellent idea. Can you use other than soda for a blast media? Corn cob? Glass beads?

I dont know. I ordered the coating from Norrells, and they recommend aluminum oxide grit. Brownells has a 6lb jug, I will order next payday and see what happens

The pain on this is holding the air nozzle, holding the part (use gloves) and moving the hose around in the box of baking soda. Wait, I need 3 hands for that :o I think I may try putting the end of the hose on a funnel and putting the baking soda in the funnel. Or, getting the part on some sort of stand/holding device.
