OAL of Sierra ProHunter 125gr 30-30

Post by happyhunter »

I don't have the Sierra manual. What is the Overall length of the 30-30 when loaded with the Sierra Pro Hunter 125 gr? If all else fails I guess I load them so the top of the case is in the middle of the bullet canalure.

I bought 200 of them. I want to load up some light loads for my 12 and 13 year olds to use this fall.

Thanks!!

I don`t have any loaded at this time although I do shoot that bullet and it is a fine one indeed. My favorite is still the Speer
150 gr Hot Core though.
Sounds like you will need to load up a dummy and measure it.

I trim all my rifle brass these days, but I have always just crimped them in the middle of the cannelure and have gotten along just fine.

Dittos. It works and the bullet base is no deeper than the inside of the neck bottom.

I haven't loaded the Sierra 125s, but do use Remington 125 PSPs in my old 1899 Savage. The COL is 2.53".

It looks like the Sierra will have a OAL of slightly less than 2.45 inches. I have a datasheet for 130gr SPR FP that states 2.540 inches. So the 125 is gonna be .1 inch less. That sounds pretty significant to me. The bullet will still all be in the neck and not the case.

Maybe I am making a bigger deal out of this than I should be. I don't know. I see data tossed around and they mention powder charge and bullet weight but not seating depth. I've seen several bullets that are the same weight but seat quite differently (.357 cal 158gr XTP and the Gold Dot of same weight and cal). I don't know that you can take the powder charge from one bullet and apply it to another that seats deeper even if it is the same weight.

My Sierra data shows OAL of 2.420 with their 125 gr bullet made for the 30-30. It is the #2020 bullet. It has a canalure so if that is your bullet you should be fine crimping in the canalure.

I've loaded hundreds of rounds of the Sierra 125 gr. HP bullet over 3031. Just seated to the cannelure and shot them. Accurate as the 170s, kill things, fun to shoot, it is all good. Sometimes the engineer in us takes over where it isn't important.

If you're loading for a Winch. mdl 94, a shorter than normal OAL is fine. The cartridge stop on the link will hold them in the magazine, and if your trim length is right, they'll feed thru the action like corn thru a goose.

I've loaded hundreds to the cannelure and love 'em!

Dave,
thanks for the info!!

Hobie,
Yeah, I'm an engineer. It is fun but does make life so much more complicated....

Sierra data shows OAL of 2.420. Just before that was posted I seated them till they looked right. Measured 2.430. I gonna leave them there.

Going to try to get out in the next few days to try them. Then I'll load a bunch for the kids to shoot.

See ya!!
