Need help identifying a Win. 94 Rifle?
As too often happens, I attended an auction and purchased a gun that I probably shouldn't have. As such, I would like some help in determining whether I bought a rare gun or a gun that had been modified from original. The gun is a Winchester Model 94 rifle with a 20" barrel. The serial number is 945*** which puts it as a 1925 gun. It has a crescent buttplate, but upon further investigation, I think it was a 24" or 26" gun shortened to 20". The forearm from the receiver to the forend cap measures 9 3/8". According to G. Madis' book, the 20" rifle was pretty rare and the forearm was usually 1" shorter than the longer barreled rifle. The magazine tube hanger measures 3 3/4 " from the end of the tube to the center pin in the hanger. The tube is 3/32" inches shorter than the barrel, and muzzle diameter is 0.740". The Winchester proof mark is on the receiver, but I can't find one on the barrel. The lettering is pretty sharp, but I think it's been reblued as there is a flat spot on the barrel about 2 inches ahead of the rear sight. If any of you have thoughts about the gun, please let me know. Thank you for your time. Matt

You sayin' it has a "rifle" forend, cap & mag hanger vs two barrel bands? Is the crown flat, or nicely rounded? Since youy describe a flat spot on the barrel, you must be talkin' round barrel? What kinda front sight?

It might be a Short Rifle.
FWIW:
Short Rifles w/long forends have the rear sight dovetail center located 5" from the receiver.
Short Rifles w/short forends have the rear sight dovetail center located 4" from the receiver.
The center of the front sight dovetail is 1" from the muzzle on both versions.
