I Should Have Known Better

Post by Pop Watts »

Don't shoot old bullets someone else has reloaded !

Total case head seperation on a 218 Bee put a dampner on my afternoon at the range.

I had pulled a couple of these bullets and the load weighed OK, maybe it was a bad case, maybe it was overloaded??

I am going to pull the rest of them, that's for sure.

Pop.

hope that was the worse of the damage. Good lesson for all to consider.

Probably not bad handloads, but more like a bad handloader who never inspected the inside of empty cases and just kept reloading them, thinking they'd last forever.

I'm glad neither you nor your rifle were damaged.

My # 1 rule. Ever since a friend lent a new shooter his $8K Purdy an' got it back in 4 pieces. My friend was pretty philosophical about it: "I didn't have to loan him THAT shotgun." And to the fellar's credit he got it fixed. I don't have any qualms about lettin' others shoot my guns, but my ammo'll get used in 'em!

Pop, glad you, or less impotantly, the gun didn't get hurt! Image

Yikes!...Glad your & your rifle are OK...Sorry for your misfortune.. I'm curious what brand of brass that is, as I've seen CIL/Dominion brass do the same thing ... That case looks like a balloon head or at least a semi balloon head case and that's what I've seen fail with the CIL/Dominion brass... It happened to me...The head cracked off sizing a LUBED case! Brittle!!!...If that's CIL/Dominion brass you've got there, you may want to acquire some other brand..

I had sort of the same experiecne once...I had a .270 and a friend offerred that he knew all about reloading the .270 (I wasnt into reloading then) and he loaded some up and we went to range, and boom - case head speration, gas blew past my face. He siad, "Ah, must be old brass. Dont worry about it. " Like a fool I fired another shot. Boom! Case heads seperated again. Gas in my face.
Turned out that he had some old mixed brass a friend had given him, probably reloaded to hell already, and then loaded them with a made up over max load of Varget because it was the only powder he had and he said - "I had to load them up like that otherwise you wouldnt get 3100 fps, which is what a .270 should do..."
I have never fired a reload made by another person since, and never will. Took me a while to get over a flinch from that experience.
