I like express sights and all but whoa ... I wonder how far out it's regulated for the .44-40?

Is this one any better? I notice that for some reason it seems to be to a "Antique Restoration". Also, the letter mentions the records "in the museum" but I seem to recall that other letters have phrased that differently. For exmaple, "in the Cody firearms musem" etc.

I need to get that Stroebel sights book so I can look this stuff up. I wonder if the Madis Winchester sight book might have that oddity in it somwhere.
The sight by itself, if authentic, I would imagine would go $1500 or so. Not for its utility ... rather for its blatant audacity.
In the interest of learning, what is it that gives the letter on the 86 away as not being authentic to you?

Because its not authentic. No museum letter head, "antique restoration" the museum dosn't do restorations.
I'll run the SNs of both guns in the next couple of days, see what they are. The 7 leaf express sight was most often used on 76s going to england or british terratories, esp for African hunting. They liked the 76 in 50-95 with a 24 inch barrel and the 7 leaf sights.
