I have a few hunded 180 gr. Win PPs from an 30-06 I don't own anymore. I would like to shoot them up for triggertime practice out of my T/C Contender Carbine. I have H414, H322 and IMR 3031 on hand and I'm looking for data and advice. As I said before these would be just practice rounds not big game hunting rounds.
Thanks,
Mike

Should be fine. But I apparently can't read.
So if it were me I'd start with 24 gr. of the IMR 3031 and working up. I wouldn't go over 27.5-28 gr.

My Hodgdon Manual #23, lists 180 grain loads under its "Lead Bullet Loads" section for the .30-30... but not for your powders. Since it only lists one powder with a starting load, H4198 @ 18 grains for 1645fps. They list 23 grains as a max load for 2032 fps. Using a jacketed bullet, I would start with at least a 10% reduction and work up to an accurate load from there. Your T/C Carbine is probably capable of doing better than their test gun (20" Winchester 94), so I really wouldn't worry about using the max load, I always make it a firm habit to only work up to that max. Additionally, I find that max load are rarely more accurate than slightly lower velocities. But, that's just me; then again I still have my original issue parts...Lanyard Stretcher wrote:I have a few hunded 180 gr. Win PPs from an 30-06 I don't own anymore. Well I loaded up 34 grains of H414 and topped it off with the Win 180 gr. PP. No pressure problems, easy extraction. The load is 1 gr. less than the starting load for a 170 grn bullet. Since it is blowing a gale here in the high dessert group shooting will have to wait. I hope I have a good practice load.

H414 is a great powder for 170 gr and heavier bullets in the .30-30. One of the loads I use in my leverguns is 35 grs H414 under a 205 gr. cast bullet. A ballistic lab checked the pressure and it was almost 10% below Sammi Map.
Velocity in a 26" barrel runs 2,080 f.p.s.
Your load of 34 grs. / H414 with a 180 gr. is plenty safe......
Have fun,

Re: Single shot 30/30 w/ 180 gr PPs?
I have a TC carbine with 21 inch Ackley Improved barrel. I have settled on using 125 gn ballistic tips in mine for most of my shooting. I have also used 150 gn (?) mag tips some years ago with moderate success.
The problem with a lot of 30 cal projectiles is that at 30-30 velocities the bullet is not moving as fast as it needs to for optimal performance. This would particularly be the case with a 180 gn pill, which is pretty heavy by 30-30 standards.
If you are burning these pills up on practice how they expand really will not matter, if you are planning on hunting I would suggest a ballistics test on some ballistics jelly before wounding game in the field.
