44 mag Fusion ammo

Post by leverhunter »

Quick query, has anyone used the Fusion 44 mag ammunition in a levergun? I picked up a box several months ago, haven't tried it yet. It is the only box I have seen in any gunshops here in Alberta. Even the shop I bought it from denies ever carrying it, but they are not known for their knowledgable staff!
Is this stuff any good? It is 240g HP. Worth chasing it down or just shoot it up and move on? Stuff cost the same for 20 rounds that Win, Rem, American Eagle etc costs in 50 round boxes. I bought it because a) my hunting partner has had very good results with 30-06 Fusion ammo and b) I was curious. I would be shooting it from a Win 94 w/24 inch barrel and a Marlin w/20 inch barrel.
Thanks

My friend sighted in and shot a whitetail with Fusion 44Mag this year. This was fired out of a 8" handgun. I called to ask what he thought of it to answer you post. This is his comment(s):

Not the most accurate he has ever used but at least average or slightly above average for that bullet weight. (sighted in 50 yards 1.5" high).

Shot a deer 50-60 yards away broadside. It went 20 yards or so and stood to be shot again, quartering away. (This is a NYS buck so the weight would be around 165 pounds where he is).

Both bullets were recovered. They both flattened out like pancakes. The lead and jacket pretty much stayed together but the expansion peeled very far back.

The first shot penetrated the two lungs and lodged in the ribcage. The second shot entered behind the shoulder right at the line. It fell out of the chest cavity upon field dressing, so it is unknown exactly where it came to rest in the deer.

He said he would practice with something slightly cheaper or use these for practice. He favors the Federal Hydra-Shok in this weight for deer as he has killed many and the performance was better. On the other hand, he said he wouldn't hesitate to shoot a deer with Fusion, but he would keep the range to 40 yards and only shoot broadside into the lungs.

This is a very limited scenario but I hope you find enough criteria to form your own opinion and proceed accordingly.

Hi, thanks for the info and pass my thanks to your friend as well please.
Interesting results. The deer I shoot here on the Alberta prairie are bigger bodied than the ones in NYS. I haven't taken a deer yet with either of my 44's. They are something new to try. Most prairie deer are taken at longer ranges with 270's etc.
Sounds like I will shoot a few of these and likely hunt with them in the boreal/parkland areas of Alberta.
Like I mentioned, this is the only box of Fusions in 44 mag I have found.
Thanks again for your help.
