New chrony and some results

Post by Tony »

I've been reloading for about a year now and thought it was time I chronographed what I load to get an idea of what I'm doing. I picked up a Shooting Chrony Master Beta version, (the blue one). Here are some results from a load I've been using for a while with good results. I use Lee equipment. The firearm was my Winchester Model 94 that I just completed the rebounding/half cock hammer convert that I learned about on this site.

The load:
29.5gr of IMR3031
Speer 170gr jacketed FP
Federal cases trimed to length with Lee trimer
CCI large rifle primers
Crimp: Lee factory crimp die

The results:
Average velocity 2064
Extreme spread 27.97
Standard deviation 9.59
Average deviation 7.30

The accuracy wasn't the greatest. About a 2 inch group at 50 yards. With the new hammer and sear, the trigger pull is a bit stiff. With use I think it will get better.

Thanks,

Tony

Thanks for sharing, is that out of a 20" tube? I often wonder how my loads are going out of my 16" tube.

The extreme spread doesn't look to bad. I would bet your group tightens up as your trigger breaks in.

Nath,
Yes that was out of a 20 inch barrel. I also chrony'd some factory ammo as a base line. It was the Federal Power Shok that Cabellas had for $7.99 a box. I haven't calculated the Average Deviation yet but here are the results. Both the factory and my reloads were 10 shot strings.

Federal Power Shok 170gr

Average velocity 2098
Extreme spread 54.75
Standard deviation 17.72

A chrony opens up a whole new world. No more guessing. It is real nice to know exactly what YOUR loads are doing out of YOUR gun. Congratulations on your purchase. 1886.
