OT: What kind of internet service do you use?

Post by O.S.O.K. »

I'm just curious as to what people are using for internet service... I use cable, being in-town.

I had the line-of-sight wifi out in the country - was the most economical way to get high speed internet.

So, is it cable, phone-line, satelight or line-of-sight wifi?

I'm off-grid so I use Wildblue, which is a satellite service.

Frontier DSL (phone line). Pretty good. A heck of a lot better than the dial-up we had.

Joe - We used to have dial-up until our phone company finally made DSL available to us. Believe me -- I wanted to hang myself more than once when we had dial-up.

We have a plan with our phone company that gives us Basic service along with Long Distance service and DSL Service (internet). That plan includes UNLINITED long distance phone Service and believe me we get our money's worth out of that as the wife is on the phone daily with her Sister and our kids, grandkids, etc.. The plan is $97.00 a month. Very cheap for what we get.

Check with your phone company and see what they offer.

Joe,

Does your line qualify for DSL? I don't know what phone company you have, but Verizon has a few deals for 17.99 a month, long distance is more, but if you don't call long distance much, you can get a pre-paid card and use that.

If you have a cell phone, then just get a dry-loop DSL.

It is just the DSL and no dial tone, basically just a data connection. If you wanted say Vonage, you would order the DSL dry-loop, then Vonage would give you the dial tone, known as Voice over IP. Many people order the dry-loop and save money by using their cell phones.

DSL. Had cable in the old house, but it's not available yet in the area of our new house. Can't tell much difference between the two.

We use Wildblue in MT-seems to work well. Only HughesNet (and slow phone) is available in AZ-we've had a real problem with ultra-slow feeds with Hughes. My neighbor suggested googling: HughesNetsucks---an amazing number of complaints there. :?:

Cable but we have 5 providers in our town so it's a lot cheaper then the town over!
When towns work out deals for "free" services for the town and limit the provider(s), everyone but the town pays DEARLY.
I pay 1/2 of what the people down the street do and frankly it's better, they have comcast and they can suck, they actually block alternative DNS services etc. Ever notice how you have a typo and it sends you to something THEY want you to see ;)

We have an air card from Centennial wireless (AT&T). It's about 3x faster than the dial up we had before, runs about $40 bucks a month. Hoping Verizon will update our lines to fiber optic sometime in the near future, but they don't seem to be in a hurry. Cable not available here in the country, otherwise I would be willing to try Comcast, have seen there service in use at my son's house, really fast. Our church office is hooked up to Wildblue and they difficulties with quite often.

We have mobil broadband from Verizon. We don't have any wired internet access (other than dail-up) in our neck of the woods, and our only choices were satillite or mobile broadband. The costs are about the same and after reading reviews on both systems, we went mobile. We have been very pleased. The real plus is that we can use our laptop at the computer desk, in the recliner, in the car going down the highway, or in front of a campfire in the middle of the woods. I am not sure we would switch to DSL when we do finally get it out here, even though it will probably be cheaper.

ok, but I can't bear the thought of $40 a month when I can get it for $12.95. Call me cheap.

I think you're about the only other person that has ever even heard of this service. I liked it.

The only draw-back was the 75' antena behind the house... but you could get up to T-1 with this service - if you hiked the tower up some...

Just the opposite here. I have 800k Cable Internet and get my phone via VoIP - and it's cheaper for the pair than even basic, no Long-distance Dialtone.

I got sick and tired of dial-up, got to be unreliable and oh so slow, became almost unusable. Cable or DSL not available, I went with Verison Wireless, can use it on either my laptop or desktop. About 3 times the cost of dial up, but oh so worth it.

Verizon Wireless. Certainly not the least expensive, but it is portable. Over several years, I have moved from an air card, to a USB modem, to the present embedded GOBI device in my Sony netbook and a "Mi-Fi" that is also portable. The Mi-Fi can act as a USB modem or as a Wi-Fi with a 30-foot radius, for several computers.

Admittedly, as I am trying to financially downsize, one or even both of the Verizon gadgets may have to be removed from the account.
