Optimum velocity for 45-70 Hollow Point?

Post by TedH »

I've been playing with the Lyman 457122 hollow point mold. What I've loaded and shot so far all show very good accuracy in my Guide Gun. I've cast some from straight wheel weights and some from a 50-50 mix of wheel weights and pure lead. Doesn't seem to matter, they all shoot good. Wonder what the wheel weight bullets would do in tissue? Are wheel weights to hard for a hollow point to stay in one piece after striking an animal? I was thinking for a deer hunting load the 50-50 alloy would be better. I've shot them from 1100 fps to about 1550 fps so far with similar accuracy. I don't see any point to try and go faster than I have already.

I've killed deer with wheel weight bullets before, but not this particular HP mold.

WELL, LETS LOOK AT IT THIS WAY. YOU WANT TO KILL THE SOFTEST ANIMAL ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH, HIS RIBS ARE A LOT SOFTER THAN YOURS OR MINE, AND YOU WANNA DO IT WITH A 45 CALIBER FLATNOSE BULLET. WHAT IN THE DICKENS DO YOU EVEN NEED A HOLLOWPOINT FOR IN THE FIRST PLACE ??
THERE IS A FAMOUS GUNRIDER WHO'S NAME YOU KNOW WHO KILLED HIS BIGGEST BUCK WITH A 38SPL WADCUTTER RIGHT 'TWEEN THE STAG'S RIBS, DEADER THAN CANNED TUNA AND AFTERWARDS HE ATE THE BULLET HOLE.
RIDE, SHOOT STRAIGHT, AND SPEAK THE TRUTH

I know I don't need a hollow point. I've killed deer with much less of a gun than a 45-70 too, but that wasn't the question. I try to hunt every year with a different load. All that time casting bullets and stuffing them in cases needs to be put to use for something besides poking holes in paper.

your 50/50 mix alloy is softer than straight WW's.it could expand some but as above a deer isn't a harden target :D .I have shot deer with WW's bullets and have "never" recovered a bullet todate.they might have expanded some but the deer sure was dead and had a blood trail stevie wonder could follow.a .458/.459 bullet is a killer hp or not on deer.

Here's a pic of air cooled WW in water and clay. No hollow point.

Ooohh, That's that Gould mold. PM me yer recipe's please. That bullet is on my list to develop loads for this summer.

In answer to your question, I'd like to be @ ~1300 fps at my maximum hunting distance, so ~1600 for me.

Here's the article you want:

Mr. Gould's exellent designed bullet using XMP5744 out of a guide gun at close range makes quite a racket and large hole. That powder smells different also. The he(R)bivores will go nocturnal after that sound. Thanks Tycer!

Tycer, there hasn't been a load I've put together that I wouldn't take hunting. They have all been accurate, almost to boredom. On the low end I've used 11-13 gr. of Unique and also 33 to 37 gr. of Accurate 5744. 37.0 gr. was just a shade over 1550 fps, so 38 gr. would probably get you to your desired speed of 1600. I may try that one out as well.

I also really like Mr. Gould's bullet with 5744. The only think I don't like about that powder is that it's kind of dirty and doesn't burn completely in these loads. Not a big deal though.

Lot's of great info in that link Tycer, thanks! Looks like plain old WW alloy at about 1500-1600 will be just what the doctor ordered.
