OT--Cartridges in my life

Post by getitdone1 »

Wrote about this not too long ago. Thought I'd give you version II.

Just finished reloading .348 Winchester ammo and was cleaning-up the bench top and turned a Frankford Arsenal reloading tray over and there was a big list of rifle and handgun cartridges. I says to myself: " Wonder how many of'em I've reloaded or at least had experience with?"

Rifle:

222 Rem--223 Rem--220 Swift--257 Roberts--257 Weatherby--250 Savage--25-06 Rem--270 Winchester--7mm Remington mag--30 W.C.F. (30-30 Winchester)--348 Winchester--375 H&H mag--45-70 Govt. (total of 13)

Handgun:

22 Rem. Jet--25 ACP--9mm Luger--38 Special--357 mag--44 mag--45 Colt (total of 7)

I reloaded most of the above. At this time I'm reloading 45 Colt, 30-30, 348 Win, 45-70 and 243 Win.

Of course I've also shot 22 short, long and LR and 22 mag. rim-fire and 20, 16 and 12 ga shot shells.

Cartridges I'd like to add to my above experience are: 45 ACP, 50-70 Govt., 45-120 Sharps, 405 Winchester and 500 Nitro in a double bbl rifle.

Bragg'in? No. I know some in this group have had experience with and reloaded twice this many different cartridges--or more.

Yep, rifles are the guns I like most. And, just occured to me, maybe it's mainly because they are the most capable. They also have the most exciting history. Two pretty good reasons.

I must be a pretty simple dude: 22 s,l, lr, 38/357, 44 spc/mag, 30/30 Win., all your standard shotgun gauges except 28, 7.62 Nato(M-60 Machine gun), 5.56(M-16), 223, 356 Win., 32/20(very limited), 30 Carbine, 6.5 Swedish Mauser(very limited but with the proper bullets for my .268 bore, hope to change this!). Those are guns that I have owned and fooled with. Ditto on wanting to expand to a 45/anything in a Shiloh Sharps.

Let's see if I can remember them all:

Handgun:
.25Auto
.32 S&W
.38 S&W
.38 Spl.
.357 Magnum
.44 Magnum
.45 ACP
.45 Colt

Rifle:
.22-250
.30 Carbine
.30-30
.30-06 Gov't
.32-40 Winchester
.375 Winchester
.40-90 Sharps Bottleneck
.45-70 Gov't
.53 Hawken (muzzleloader, uses either .520 or .526 balls)

Shotguns:
20 gauge
12 gauge

That's for reloading. Since I haven't shot the .32-40 ammo I have yet, maybe it don't count!

OT--My hardest kicking gun

Post by getitdone1 »

What's your hardest kicking gun?

Mine's my Browning model 1886 carbine shooting hot 400 gr loads. The buttplate is not very big. Off the bench it really gets your attention.

My Browning model 71 carbine is much more pleasant to shoot with 200 or 250 gr bullets. I attribute this to it's large shotgun butt and much lighter bullets.

I may start loading the 86 mainly with Remington 400 gr bullets and Accurate 5744 powder which roughly duplicates the old black powder load. Much easier on the shoulder and still pretty potent. More in line with the history of this gun and cartridge. Guessing 13-1400 fps. Have shot a few rounds of this load. No doubt would penetrate well. Will chronograph when weather gets warmer and give report on it and lots of other guns and loads.

edit: I intended this as a new thread. Senility has no mercy.

Hardest kicker is my 480 Ruger Rossi 92. Really bangs me up. Doesn't weigh much.

Hmmm lets see....I don't claim to be an expert but if I have a rifle or handgun for it, I can reload it. That is the rule.

223, 6.5X55, 30 WCf, 30-40 Krag, 30-06, 300 Sav, 7.62X39mm, 7,62X54Rmm, 35 Rem, 38-55, 375 Win, 8X57mm, 8X56Rmm, 7.5X55, and (7mm Mag & 270 win for my nephew).

I have an interest in adding 32 Win Spl, 45/70, 32-20, 7-30 Waters, 375 H&H and 257 Roberts to the above list at some point and time when I buy the appropriate rifles. I no longer have rifles for these but still have dies and some brass for 6.5 Jap, 7.7 Jap, 303 Brit, 7X57mm & 308 win.

In regards to handguns I reload for 38spl, 357 mag, 9mm Luger, 41 mag, 44spl, 44 mag, 45 ACP (& AR), & 45 Colt.

I have thought about adding firearms in 30 Luger, 30 Mauser, 30 Tok, 9mm Mak, 32 ACP, 380 ACP, and 10mm to my batttery in the past & if I ever did in the future I would have to get busy reloading for them too

I don't reload shot shells but will probably add that to my list soon......the democrats are going to make all shooting difficult by making ammo hard to get IMO.

I most commonly reload for 38spl, 45 ACP, 44spl, 6.5X55, 30-06, 375 Win, 38-55, and 30 WCF

I'm not much of an expermeinter....I follow the reloading manuals and do the more most common tricks (trim, uniform flash holes, chamfer, etc) when comes to tweaking my ammo but only as is necessary.

I am always amazed that my minimalist approach seems to produce as good a product as my buddies that agonize over every little detail and step in the process.

Just lucky I guess.

Wm

P.S. I don't cast my own bullets but I will probably will start doing that too.
