Chronographing--first time today

Post by getitdone1 »

Did some chronographing today. Mostly 22 LR and 22 MRF. Went fine with the 22's but could not get my 45 Colt and 9mm Luger to work. The proper message on the chronograph before shooting is "Fire." I'd shoot my handguns and this word would stay there. No number at all.

Distance from chronograph was 8 feet and then backed-up to 13 1/2 feet.
I don't like to be very far away with handguns. Least little flinch and goodbye chronograph or chronograph parts.

What's my problem?

(Report of many loads, guns and cartridges in couple of weeks. Taken lot longer than I thought.)

Was it getting dark? How high above the sensors was the bullet passing? Could it have been too high?

If it's to dark, or to much light , they'll miss readings.
If the bullet is to far above the screens you'll miss readings.
Always a good idea to have an extra battery on hand, sometimes missed readings and screwy stuff will straighten right up with a fresh battery.

New battery. Old one working O.K. but used new one.

Not best light but after trying handguns went back to 22LR and it still worked O.K.

Instructions say put bullet 5-8" above gizmo that bullet passes over. I'm sure I was higher than that. 22LR worked when I shot about 12" over it.

5" is closer than I like to come with a handgun. Scopes on rifles little tricky too in that your barrel is about 1 1/2" lower than the center of reticule. My 6-24X is bad in that can't hardly focus it for such a short distance. My 2-7X on other gun set on 2X was fine.

Tried throwing empty casings across chronograph but got no reading. Just curious. Maybe too slow to work.

Handgun or rifle, I always like to put mine across about 5" above the sensors. If it is picking up the 22, it should be picking up everything else. There might be something wrong with the processor. You might want to take it back and exchange it. I've never had that problem that you describe.

I say it is a light issue. I have noticed with mine that on really bright days that shinny jacketed bullets don't alway read. Experiment with some card board over the screens. If there is not enough light it is hard to get a reading aswell.

Thanks for all the advice.

Dakota,

How do you keep warm up there in the land of Lawrence Welk? My mother sure did enjoy his show. Lawrence moved to much better weather in southern CA--where I'm headed in month or two. Here in SW Indiana we may see coldest day of year tomorrow. Down to maybe -4. The record high and low for some days here can vary by 85 degrees !
