OK Kell....fess up...what's all your loading data...
How hot have you pushed it? I have some 89gr cast GC bullets just waiting for this one.
I can't wait to order the components...waiting on the seller to indicate whether he has dies and brass to sell, otherwise I would have already ordered same from Buffalo Arms..plus of course a new Marbles Tang sight.

Re: OK just blew all my Tulsa Money...need load data.
Sorry Knasas Ed.... I just eyeballed my old Winchester and Lyman tool collection and the early 25-20 seems to be no longer around.
Re: OK just blew all my Tulsa Money...need load data.
The 25-20 Singleshot is a completely different cartridge from the 25-20 WCF.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.
Re: OK just blew all my Tulsa Money...need load data.
6th edition of Cartridges of the World says 9 gr. 2400 for a 60 gr. bullet, 1790 fps mv, and 8 gr. 2400 for a 86 gr. bullet for 1470 fps mv. Says the factory load was an 86 gr. bullet at 1410 fps. Also says most .25-20 SS rifles have been rechambered for the more available .25-20 WCF.
Have you hugged your rifle today?

Yes jdad, the 25-20 SS and 25-20 WCF are different cartridges, but as strong as the lowall action is you can use the same reloading data for either. 86 gr. bullet with 5 gr. Unique, 10 gr. 2400, 8.5 gr. 4227, 8.5 gr. SR-4759. Enjoy

Re: OK just blew all my Tulsa Money...need load data.
Thanks for all the replies. Looks like I'll start with 25-20 WCF data down low, and go from there. I did a little searching on the internet and most seemed to say that it performed best with heavyweight bullets. There also seems to be a very religious following for those who have shot them in the past. I always wanted to play with the .25 Hornet and this has a little more case capacity than the Hornet version. Provided the bore approaches .257 we should have some fun with it. I've got all kinds of plans...from cast to Nosler BT's, and Hornady plastic tipped bullets. I have quite a few different bullets to try in it. I can't wait to wring this thing out...surprisingly enough...the Ackley books had a section about it with a little data.

Yep - I believe the cartridge is longer?jdad wrote:The 25-20 Singleshot is a completely different cartridge from the 25-20 WCF.

Here's a picture of the cartridge - entirely different than the 25-20 WCF:

Here's some brass for sale at Grafs: http://www.grafs.com/metallic/680
I have a turn bolt Savage in 25-20 WCF and shoot the 86 grain jacketed softnose bullets out of it.
That is one sweet low wall! I think you got a very good deal on it too! Congrats!
ETA -I seem to remember an article on Handloader or Rifle about the 25-20 Single Shot and it listed plenty of load data and tips - perhaps a search there would be fruitful. If I had any idea which issue it was in, I could scan it and send it to you...

Kansas Ed, dont know if this will be much help to you, but the dimensions I have found come from the 5th Ed. Cartridges of the World. The 25/20 s.s. case is longer than the 25/20wcf. Winchester reduced the length to fit through the 92 action.
Bullet dia .257 neck dia .275 shoulder dia .296 base dia .315 rim dia .378 case length 1.63 cartridge overall length 1.90

Re: OK just blew all my Tulsa Money...need load data.
Ed, that is a great find! I love those old rifles. Wonder if a man with more dexterity than mine could paper patch a .243 bullet to fit the bore if it turns out to be more than .257?

Telegraphist: Thanks for the dimensions!
Tumbleweeds: I'm not a paper patcher..but I'm thinking the Teflon Wrap might be an option...The cast GC bullets I have are 97 grains at .258 and a BHN of 12.5 They will be my first loads. Dang.........it'll still be a week before any of this is here....

Just a warning stay away from Bretram Brass their rims are too thin and headspace is bad. I shot a 60 gr. bullet and 10 grains of 2400 in mine.
